2 lines for open water
Watching on the YouTube, the guys fishing east and down south could have 2 or more lines trolling. Get a stupid question: Why do we not allow here in AB?

Probably because we don't have enough fish.

There is a guy also on Cold lake Alberts fishing alone in his boat on you tube for lake trout using two rods . I text him and told him its not legal and he should take it down ,as they might charge him . He told me it was totally legal as long as he was the only one in the boat . Not sure if he ever got a ticket yet.
I remember years ago you could have 5 line per person ice fishing .
Now its two for ice fishing .
They should keep it the same for open water and ice fishing .
Maybe it should be 1 rod per season .

Tell him he's fishing in the wrong province. That's a B.C. regulation.

The lakes in Alberta aren't wide enough for two lines.

Albertas had restrictive fishing regulations for decades. One line in open water, bait bans, no live bait, etc. Better get used to it.
Our regulations are 3 lines per person with six hooks per line. I troll 9-10 lines and often have 7-10 fish hookups.

On a matter of the subject - I really do not see any difference when fishing on ice or open water so I would like to see 2 lines allowed in open water too. Always nice to have options to use two different baits and experiment a bit. Or drop one line in water with bait and spin cast with other. Back in Europe we would have 5 line limit but I never used more than 2 anyway.

Difference is that the lines are pretty well stationary during ice season, whereas you cover far more water far easier in open water.

Send a link to "report a poacher"
Maybe they'll cut you a cheque.

Why back when there were no people in Alberta there were no limits, times change.

I joke around with my kids here about the number of lines when we go out fishing at first ice off and you have 10m open water from shore and the rest is ice covered. If I park my kayak beside the ice and drill holes in the edge, can I run 2 lines through the holes from my kayak since I’m ice fishing. And if you time it just right, and the ice is small enough that you could tow it around, can you then ice troll with 2 line if they're through the ice. Just some out of the box thinking.

It is called sportfishing, so it's supposed to be challenging.
If I remember correctly, in BC you're allowed one line with one single (i.e. no treble) barbless hook.
If you practice catch and release, I simply just don't see why you would use multiple treble barbed hooks. You would want to release a live fish not a dead or injured one.

You would be incorrect
In most of BCs lakes you can use treble hooks and barbs. The single barbless is mostly rivers/streams. You are also allowed multiple hooks but they must be on the same lure
BC also has a strange rule that if you are solo in a boat you are allowed to have 2 lines
I could get into all kinds of C&R myths regarding hooks and practices but it’s not worth the effort. What I can tell you is one single hook can actually be far more lethal if it is not size appropriate especially when bait is involved. Things are more complicated than treble vs single
All that aside I would rather see Alberta cut it back to one line per angler ice or no ice.

99% of the time, I’m solo fishing from my kayak. In BC, I’m permitted 2 rods in the water in lakes (NOT in rivers/streams). When trolling flies, it’s great to drag around 2 different flies, for side-by-side comparisons or patterns or size. Even ‘twitching’ one fly and leaving the other rod with an identical fly in a rod holder may sometimes make a big difference in the number of strikes you get!
Barbed hooks are generally permitted in lakes (NOT in rivers/streams), but there are some lakes that are restricted to ‘single, barbless hooks’ or electric motors, or no/reduced retention - same sort of restrictions as in Alberta - all clearly laid out in the regs.

If you can’t catch them one, having a second line won’t help.
If you can catch them one, you don’t need two.

Dude,
A second line with a completely different fly on it could alert you to something that’s going on deep in the lake or on top. Are we not here to catch some? Or are we just here to say “It was a nice day out”?
Why would you not take advantage of fishing 2 completely different setups if you are allowed? As in fishing in a boat by yourself?

You are completely incorrect, in freshwater lakes you are allowed 2 lines with one lure on each
