Wifi calling international question
So I’m trying to understand how WiFi calling works VoiP.
https://support.apple.com/en-ca/108066
https://www.rogers.com/support/mobil...u-need-to-know
When one purchases an eSIM for overseas it doesn’t come with international calls. So when I think about having to phone back home on occasion… what could work and be included in a Roger plan without buying their expensive roaming packages.
Its seems an Apple phone can work.
Rogers seems to say a voip call doesn’t use international phone lines.
Not sure if I have a dual sim iPhone if my Roger’s sim will work if the eSIM is on… or maybe I can use my rogers Sim with hotel wifi versus dual eSIM.
Anyone use Wifi calling from Europe?
Edit… when I went to add wifi calling I had to accept which said long distance charges applies but it’s over wifi. It’s confusing.

Scenario
I have wifi calling on.
I have airplane mode on so no cellular data or phone works.
I don’t have a roaming plan active so no cellular data or phone
Someone phones my Canadian number.
Does my phone ring if I’m in Italy and am I subject to any charges?

I thought airplane mode turned off WiFi too. A WiFi connection is a prerequisite for WiFi calling.
You shouldn't be charged anything for the phone call, but you may have to pay someone for a WiFi connection.

Nope. Airplane mode doesn’t block wifi. In fact on some airlines you access your movies and tv shows over wifi. But you need wifi on.
Free hotel or restaurant wifi works. Or if one has a data plan it also works.
What can happen is no longer needing a voice and text plan… comes down to if you run a VoIP that you only need a data plan for a phone or tablet.

So I’ve downloaded Fongo app.
For free… you get a new phone number… mine is a Calgary local area code. I can make unlimited VoIP calls… voice over internet protocol.
Buddy has used it for 10 years.
I can call any phone number using wifi and not phone lines.
Tested it out… works well.
According to what I read I can call home for free anywheres in the world as long as I have internet or wifi. Anyone can call my number and I’ll pick it up regardless where I am as long as wifi is on so running data or using wifi at hotel etc.
If not in Canada I can’t call local OR to other countries. That is deemed long distance. So if in New Zealand I can call home for free but I can’t call the local restaurant without paying a long distance cost.
Interesting stuff. Free phone calling. Must be why Rogers offers the same cause they don’t want you to only use VoIP for calling and texts. Apparently for $14 a year you get free calls and texts. One still needs a data plan when other WiFi isn’t available.

I have been using this option for the past 5 years at least. Very simple. Turn airplane mode on. Turn wifi on every time you are on a wifi- you can call and you can receive calls on your local regular Calgary number.
If you use esim, it is different. You won’t be able to use your Calgary number unless you switch from esim to regular SIM card and then again turn airplane mode on BEFORE you switch to regular sim. Once you are on esim, you can now use wifi and data but only on WhatsApp or any other text/call app like TextNow and similar. TextNow will give you your local Calgary number that is different than your regular number so your friends and family will have to know it in order to call you while you are on a esim card.
We used Airalo when we were in Europe and it worked like a charm. But you can use others too.
Hope that helps.

I use Signal for wifi calling and video calling.
Basically the same as WhatsApp but without the shady owner and is more secure/private.
Same guy that sold WhatsApp to Facebook started Signal.

Is there a cost and does it work internationally?
I suspect these ones that are not charging must be scrubbing information of the phone calls.

If you want mobile wifi check this device out.
RoamWiFi 4G LTE Mobile Hotspot Router
My wife got one from Amazon for my boys when they head to Japan in May. We have been using it in Hawaii and it works great. My wife has been face timing the boys at home, they will be able to do the same when they are in Japan.

Just an observation I made this winter in Thailand.
I tried a couple Facebook messenger audio chats with a person in Canada in it was much better than a regular phone call. Loud, crisp, instant with zero lag. I was shocked at the quality of the whole call.

No cost, no scrubbing.
Many donate.
https://support.signal.org/hc/en-us/...%20in%20Signal.
I read an article on the founder. He was half of the duo that created Whatsapp.
After selling it for multi-millions to Zuckerberg, the tracking and monitoring started, which he strongly disagreed with.
He then took a small portion of his fortune and started Signal. Which is pretty much identical to what Whatsapp was, before the sale.
I'll see if I can find the article.
Found it.

Signal or Telegram both work very well. Even in Dubai where you can’t make a call on WhatsApp…
