Default What's worth watching on the telly - 2024

Wondering what people have been streaming that's worth watching?

Here’s some recent shows that we've watched that were worthwhile. I’m including a few trigger warnings.

Lessons in Chemistry - Lady chemist turns her love of cooking into a tv show. Supposedly a 2nd season in the works. TV-MA rating – in one episode the main character remembers her rape when she was a university student. Other than that, the show’s pretty tame. Highly rated on IMDB . https://www.imdb.com/title/tt13911628/

CODA - focuses on a family that operates a fishing boat out of Gloucester, Mass. The parents and one child are deaf. Show primarily focuses on the daughter who is not hearing impaired. Fair amount of swearing but most of it's in sign language. 2022 Academy Award winner. PG13

The Bear - a chef returns home to run his family's small restaurant. TV- MA rating – suicide is a recurring theme, lots of swearing, some violence......generally, it’s a pretty intense show. We weren't impressed with the first episode but decided to give it one more shot. Good decision as we liked this series quite a bit. Very good rating on IMDB.

Slow Horses – If you like spy shows and Gary Oldman, you’ll like this one. The show's about MI5 rejects who get assigned to a unit run by Jackson Lamb (Gary Oldman). Mature rating – fair amount of violence and no shortage of swearing. Highly rated on IMDB

Watching The Old Man now with Jeff Bridges. Spy thriller. Awesome! Both me and wife love it!

The Bear is absolutely fantastic. Both seasons are extremely well done. Some fantastic acting.

Been watching Into the Wild Frontier. I guess its what you would call a docu drama or something like that. Acting isnt great butthe history is interesting. Its about the many voyageurs and discovers of the west. On youtube.

I did...some cringe-worthy scenes, but quite a tale...not for everyone I suspect.

Jersey shore.

The boss is a fan so I'm stuck with it in my peripheral vision. Damn those girls used to be good looking. Now their faces look like they've been fine tuned with a bicycle pump.

I watched it. IMO there are 4 scenes that would be cringe worthy and IMO, the purpose of them was to distract the viewers from what is a pretty weak plotline with a lot of holes in it. It could be in the top 5 bad shows I watched last year.

Funny tidbit. I watched Saltburn with my wife and adult daughter. In the scene where the guy says "I'm a vampire", I said "That's not normal." I thought I was just thinking it, but I guess I said it out loud. Daughter says to me, "I am so lucky to have you around for all of the top notch advice you hand out."

Adult kids can be so much fun!

I say it's a bit of a psychological thriller, borderline black comedy. Some amazing performances, but not a movie you'll feel comfortable watching beginning to end. As someone else said, some cringe-worthy stuff but an interesting story.

As for what TO watch, The BOYS is pretty interesting/funny. Pretty violent, premise is basically a world where some people have super powers but unlike Marvel, sometimes they have ill intent. lol GENV is a spin-off series I haven't seen.

Boardwalk Empire-definitely not new, but in my opinion, the best series ever made.

WW2 in color (NetFlix) Just finished this, remarkable beginning-to-end

Default Fauda

Binge watched 4 seasons of FAUDA over Christmas. It’s an Israeli series about a crack IDF anti-terrorist squad that has their hands full in the West Bank and Gaza. It is today’s headlines come off the screen.

In an unfortunate twist of fate, one of the actors was called up as a reservist and had to have a long, lifesaving surgery this week after being injured in a blast while detonating Hamas tunnels.

The English voice over is not really bad, and I watched with subtitles. So much better than anything I’ve watched in years.

Another great series is Daisy Jones and the Six. It is loosely based on the rise and fall of Fleetwood Mac. Excellent television.

X3

Binge watched Suits over the holidays. Started good, went to sh*t for a few years, then got better at the end.

Just finished Life on Our Planet. Great show and Morgan Freeman is a great narrator!

Cheers

We just finished watching Irvine Welch’s “Crime” two seasons on Britbox. The show is set in Scotland so it’s a bit hard to understand their speech at times (subtitles help), but it was absolutely worth the time.

The Diplomat and the Lincoln Lawyer. Can't wait for season 2 for both of them. Watching Fool Me Once now. It's very complicated but also can't stop watching.
