Default Repairs

I shot a nice non-typical white tail buck that had 2 unique drop tines.
When the buck hit the ground 1 of the drop tines broke off.

I would like to repair and glue the drop tine back on. I tried Gorilla glue (cause it was on the shelf) and it did not hold.

Any recommendations of glue for this type or repairs? Two part Epoxy?

Should I drill it out and install a small pin first?

Thanks in advance

Get some small gage steel rounds. Drill a hole on one side of the antler, fill hole with super glue insert steel round. Let it set. Mark center on other piece of antler drill hole, fill with super glue and slide over other piece with the steel round. Make sure your holes line up perfect or the antler will be offset. the steel round will keep it from ever breaking apart again. Just using glue/JB weld it may break at the same place.

Taxidermist did mine, sticker on a pronghorn replaced.
Looks perfect. Not sure what they do but might be worth an inquiry.

Drill and dowel. Seen it done before. Take your time and you can barely tell unless you really look for it.

While you're at it, glue on a few extra points.

Funny thing you mentioned, cause it was exactly what my hunting partner said.

Thanks for all the advice.

Hehe...

I would recommend the following:

Nothing will bond if the surface is not completely dry. The antler break is not dry yet. Think about scoring antlers, there is a drying period before the official scoring, as they will shrink a little. I think it is 60 days, please correct me if I am wrong on that.

Once dry, you first have to deal with the bone marrow, which is porous. Before drilling anything, pour some ultra thin superglue in the marrow, and continue doing so until in doesn't penetrate anymore. That means all the pores are filled. Let that dry.

Then you are ready to drill a couple of holes in the middle to insert a metal pin. Once your holes are drilled, do the superglue thing again. Once dry, fit your pins. To complete, any 2 part epoxy will do the trick.

I do this process when I put antler handles on my knives. Antler chunks are already dry, so it is thin superglue. Makes a great bond with the blade, and solid after epoxied.

Hope this makes sense.

Good luck with your project...

You'll want to use an epoxy that will take dye or you may have an obvious line where the break is.
Epoxy Sculpt or Magic Scult will take dye just like antler will.
Drill a hole in both the broken tine and antler and insert a piece of copper wire.
Epoxy that in place until sold then you can fill in any gaps with more Epoxy Sculpt.
Use water to smooth out and contour to match the antler.
