Default 2023 whitetail trip

First time posting pics this way hopefully this works. This season has been a bit different. Deer camp for us used to be just the guys going out for a week or two and hunting. In the 12 years I've been hunting I have evolved quite a bit. 2 years ago I started bringing my oldest daughter who was 12 at the time on her first hunt. 10 days in the woods. All she got that year was a spiker buck which I had called in for her. She was proud of it. She was hooked on hunting just as all of us. Last year she just got a couple of does. She wanted a buck bad this year.

So this year was just a buddy of mine and I brought both my daughters. Youngest just turned 12 so it was a test run to see if she liked it. She didn't hunt but was there with us everyday, not one complaint the whole trip, even though she's a bit of a girly girl. She had to do makeup every morning before hitting the trails.

For the most part, my oldest was riding with my buddy and I had my youngest. We would switch every now and then depending on each of our daily hunt plans. My buddy had his moose tag (which didn't turn into reality).

I had taken my buck probably day 3 or so. That was all I had taken the entire trip. My oldest daughter ended up tagging out using her axis 243. After seeing how the 243 with with 100gr Hornady whitetails performed on multiple deer, I must say I am very impressed with that cartridge.

By day 8 my buddy and I were bagged. He had tagged out on his WT but I just had to try for my daughters buck. She was getting frustrated and down thinking she would go yet another year without one. she had missed a perfect broadside shot at a buck from 40 yards, giving him a wee haircut. offhand shot. She's just not quite strong enough on top of buck fever. We made the call and said 2 more full days and we were out.

Next morning, a saturday I sat with her playing hop scotch with some of my fav spots. call 30 mins move. call 30 mins and move. Finally, i see out of corner of my eye movement coming out to the trail we were on at 2pm. 350 yards away. Grab binos and check it out. Yep, big buck headed directly towards us. I tell my daughter and she gets excited. I set her up with trigger sticks. She sets scope to 9 power and we watch him trot towards us. I say wait.....wait....wait waiting for him to turn broadside. He wasn't playing that game. Just walked straight for us. Finally at 200 yards he stops facing us, head up. he finally sees us. I say take the shot.....right in the chest. BOOOM! I see the hit through binos he limps into the woods. We start walking towards the site and I see him first. 10 yards off trail. Never seen a happier kid, and she wouldn't shut up the rest of the night. All in all great trip with both my girls and 4 deer for the year thanks to my oldest.

Good job dad, and great job for your girl to make a shot like that at 200 yards. Outstanding, and a fine buck.

HA HA

2019 - early 2023 were exceptionally rough years for me and the girls. Think I've aged an extra 10 years in those 3 -4 years. Life is on the upside now, just me and my girls full time.

Very awesome, man! Congrats to you and your daughters (a swell as your bud) on an amazing trip.

Great write up and photos! And thanks for sharing!

And yes, those 100gr Interlocks in .243 are great performance on deer (but also everything else we have a good chance to hunt here). I only switched to TSX this year, but hadn’t had a chance to test them yet. First time I am shooting anything other than those Interlocks.

Edit: oh yeah, I wouldn’t worry about the grey hair, lol. I started getting mine in early 20’s. Was told it shows wisdom, lolol. I don’t believe them though.
