Default Battle Scars or?

I have a pretty prominent scrape line going on below the house. I put a camera on it and found a few small bucks working it. Some interesting marks on the ones neck.

Pretty sure that's just the thicker winter fur that hasn't straightened out yet after getting out of his bed. Often they'll lay their head facing backwards when they rest, causing the fur on the inside of the bend to get kerfluffed a bit.

Like a deer's bedhead, if you will.

Those are gills.

Everyone is worried about deer turning nocturnal; what we should be worried about is deer turning amphibious.

Haha! Wouldn't THAT be something!

That reminds me of an article that I read an article in an American outdoor magazine where they did an experiment on whitetails, where they released about four or five whitetail bucks in a large area and then hunted them to see how they adapted.

One was found standing in the bed of one of their trucks, and the rest were found fairly quickly.

But one buck just couldn't be found.

At one point the author found himself on a river bank, sitting down and collecting his thoughts, trying to figure out where that buck could be. At the point he looked down into the water, and he couldn't believe his eyes - there, underwater, lying in the riverbed, was the buck, with just his nose sticking out so that he could breathe.

He let the buck live - he figured that the buck had earned it.
