Default Our Premiers mandate letters to the Ministers

https://open.alberta.ca/publications...ministers-2023

So these letters outline the marching orders to her ministers. Just passing this on as it comes to my mailbox from the UPC. What I would like to see is someone like Clint Eastwood or Huntinstuff cut through the gobbleygook and in plain and simple language outline what is expected. Direct your constructive proposals to the Ministers as they are seeking input before their general meeting in the fall time. Or you can just vent here, lol.

I find it curious that the mandate letter to the Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Services mentions nothing regards to a Provincial Police force.

Notice on the news the sheriffs are getting upgraded in their duties and roles - they will have all the powers of a provincial police force with out upsetting all the rcmp fans. And the rcmp will still be available for whatever.

Maybe Sheriff's role could be policing the RCMP? Example if it turns out the Coutts 4 have spent all this time in jail on trumped up charges and then maybe the ones responsible should be sent to jail?

The Sheriffs got to find people willing to work the same type of job for a lot less money.

If you look at the top pay for the Constable ranks for the Sheriff's, RCMP, EPS, and CPS, this is what you get:

Sheriffs - $75,000
RCMP - $107,000
EPS - $106,000
CPS - $108,000

RCMP, EPS, and CPS recruit classes are running between 45 and 70% right now. (EPS and CPS are on the high end) That means they can't find enough eligible applicant. There is no more picking the top 10% of your eligible applicants to fill your recruit classes. Now anyone that meets the minimum requirements is getting in.

EPS and CPS have better recruiting numbers because of the security of the location and getting to work your entire career in a major city. Would anyone here move to High Level to be a police officer for $75000 a year? I know I wouldn't.

A friend that finished his career with the RCMP at the depot told me that many of the recruits would never have been accepted into the force when he joined, and that they shouldn't have been accepted at all. I guess that this explains why. It doesn't matter what occupation you look at, when you lower standards, and accept sub standard applicants because of demographics, you end up with sub standard performance.

Are all these new police recruits getting same type of training? Example sheriff's, RCMP,Methbridge police, etc?
They really need to be trained in using common sense ,judgement about deescalating situations and have a good solid understanding that they are there to help and serve the GOOD citizens.
With sheriff's at least they would be a bit accountable to our Premier but I truly believe they should be elected locally same as we vote for our rural m.d. Reeves.
Right now if something gets stolen say in a rural RCMP area they can tasks it to Methbridge or Calgary and sell out because nobody is looking for it there.
If we had one provincial police force crooks would not be able to go from one jurisdiction to another.
And before someone says RCMP works with other police jurisdictions. They really dont unless its something really big like a murder. If someone steals your truck off your farm and takes it to Methbridge. Nobody in is looking for it. Same as if its stolen in Calgary and then you call local RCMP because you see your truck being g driven in RCMP area the RCMP will tell you that you should call Calgary police because they are the ones you originally reported it to.
When my father was chief of police he was hired by mayor and town council and accountable to them. If people didn't like him he would have been replaced.
Everybody loved Dad. I dont see why we can't have good guys in law enforcement anymore. Maybe the educate the decency out of these new one's?
