On our third dog now, first lab no issues minimum vet bill, second lab two knee surgeries ( at 1 yr and 5 yr), third dog labradoodle two knee surgeries ( at 4 yr and 5 yr). So we are in for approx. $17k over 30 years with no insurance. Clearly with our run of luck insurance will be discussed if there is another pup in our future although we are getting real good at the post op care

Again, doing the math three dogs at $40/ month, $500 per year for 12 years, equates to over $18k.

It’s not that black and white. Accidental death? My insurance gives me back what I paid for the dog. Read the fine print. To each their own. I would say less than 5% of owners put money away. Where half of us have insurance.

For sure. Hit by a car, surgery or a blockage when they're a pup and it could easily hit 10k that you haven't saved yet. 10k loan plus interest. Definitely not black and white either way.

If we only had one dog would probably carry insurance. We usually have 4 to 6 dogs so about 15 years ago when the insurance was costing 400 per month we started our own fund and so far are ahead. When it comes to some surgeries for heart or cancers, which are expensive of course, it usually only gives the pet a year or so extra life which has to be considered in the decision and we have had to make those difficult decisions.
