Lead
There are a lot of variables with weights. Years ago there used to be a fairly decent yield of lead melting down weights, today, not as much. Most tire shops the last few years have gone to a more “Environmentally Friendly” alternative to lead. The amount of Cull these days is significant. A lot of Zinc, Steel weights, Plastic coated weights… A 100 pond pail of weights can yield as little as 20 pounds of lead, or maybe up to 50 pounds. Surprising what the cull weighs after smelting them down. Used to be tire shops were happy to give them away, but now with more people making hooks, or shot pellets, it usually costs a bit. I usually pay about $40-$50 for a 5 gallon pail of raw wheel weights depending on what they look like.
