Default 244 Remington 722

I got a little carried away at a firearms auction and ended up with a very nice old 1956 722 in 244 Remington with a 12 power weaver. I found a set of dies, 6mm cases, and Sierra 75 grain HP. Any suggestions on powders to start with??

Default .244 75gr Sierra HP 2.84" OAL

You may have a 1-12 twist so 100 gr bullets are not so good. From the Ken Waters Pet Loads 75gr Speer HP bullet 41gr -IMR 4064/3276fps R-P brass [very accurate] or 47gr-Win 760 R-P brass / mag primer 3284 fps
42gr -IMR 4320/3296fps R-P brass/ 75gr Sierra HP
50gr -H4831/3231fps R-P brass/75gr sierra HP /mag primer [one of two most accurate loads]
Work up to these loads starting a couple grains lower.

Totally agree, if it is a factory stamped 244 Remimgton, it will be a slow twist, one of the reasons the 243 Winchester took off and the 244 died a not so slow death! Light ( read short) bullets for sure

My 6mm loved 70 and 75 gr Noslers pushed fast by IMR4350 and W760. Mine was a 9" twist so it also handled heavier bullets well.

I am assuming yours was a 6mm Remington not stamped 244 Remington? Or did Winchester make the 244 in a 1:9

Thanks for the suggestions. I Loaded up a bunch of rounds this evening and I ended up using 41.5 grains of IMR4350 behind a Sierra 70 grain as a starting point. Also pulled the stock off the old girl for a thorough clean / degrease and surpriseingly it has been bedded sometime in its 66 year life span?? The trigger is also amazingly good? It feels like someone put some effort into putting a 1950’s era varmit, deer rifle together way back in the day.

Default Typo ?

I thought you needed data for Sierra 75gr bullets? From the Hornady 3rd Edition.70gr bullet IMR 4350 min 43.gr-3100fps........MAX 48.9gr-3600fps Remington brass and Rem 9 1/2 primer.
75 gr bullet IMR 4350 min 43.1gr-3100fps ..........MAX 48.6gr same brass + primer.Ken Waters recommended IMR 4064 for 75gr bullets, 80-90gr bullets IMR 4350 , 95gr H4831 and lastly for 100gr H450 and WW785. I have a couple boxes of 6mm Barnes TSX 85gr for sale in the Buy and Sell section here if deer are on the menu?

Dean are the 85 TSX'S short enough to stabilize in the 244?

Sorry that was a typo on my part. They are 75 grains.
I used the Lyman 50th edition for 75 gr. jacketed HP that had 41.5 gr IMR-4350 as a suggested starting point.
I did notice that there was a spread between the starting loads depending which manual I used.

4350 does seem to come up with a lot of frequency.

Default 85gr TSX

Not sure as I don't own a 6mm but they are as long as a 100gr Partition with a much more pointed ogive? Shorter bearing surface.A 1-12 will shoot a 90gr cup +core bullet. Harold

Good to know as I had it backwards. I was under the impression that the ability to stabilize was dependant on the total length, and was going to use a round nosed 100 grain that I already had.

I would probably go with h4350 due to its increased temp stability

Default 6mm 100gr RN

They may shoot in your .244 1-12 as I was able to shoot 100gr CIL RN in a 1-14 Savage 99 .250/3000

What a nice shooting caliber! Using these light 75 grain bullets, as well as a starting load of IMR 4350 the recoil was minimum AT MOST. Almost more of a gentle shove than a kick. The trigger felt great, and the 60 year old scope was nice and clear. All in all I'm pretty happy with the first of my auction acquisitions. Now to find some 25-20 components for #2.
Here's 2 of the 4 targets I shot today at 110 meters.

I'm happy that the rifle seems to work fine, I didn't find get any negative surprises, and it seemed happy with the lighter weight bullets. Next up is a Hornady interlock 100 grain RN. I'm very curious to see what kind of effect the 1:12 rifling will have on these higher weight bullets.
