North Island First Nations declare intent to take control fisheries in traditional waters

The pair of B.C. First Nations say they are done with Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) controlling aquaculture and fisheries in their traditional waters and intend to assert local control.

The Gwa’sala-‘Nakwaxda’xw First Nations (GNN) — currently based in the Port Hardy area of northern Vancouver Island — have announced the pending creation a Memorandum Of Understanding to assert control over fisheries in their traditional territories.

Walkus asserted the nations will now be instating their traditional laws, stating they are going to “take over that part of legislation that has oppressed us for too long.”

He confirmed that this means they will control the licensing of the finfish industry within all of their traditional territories.

GNN councillor Darryl Coon said it is time for GNN’s chief and council to take the “monumental step to take back what’s rightfully ours, the waters of the Gwa’sala-‘Nakwaxda’xw territories.

It is rather well known that one of the Walkus clan owns a dozen of the best equipped seiners money can buy.

Should this proceed, you can expect to see his fleets' fishing time increase exponentially.

And if that occurs, they will then have to deal the Fraser FN's as they will certainly be catching Fraser bound chinook.

Nog it sounds like between this thread and the hunting thread you have going, BC's fishing and hunting are in much peril!! With the rest of us to be in the same position soon.

The Charter guys and Lodges are potentially going to be in big trouble.

In respect to the fishing how can Albertans help to try and circumvent these types of actions from going ahead?

I don't think its that far fetched that one day soon my children who were born on the Island can no longer go back there to fish/hunt. It wont take long before that is the case across the entire country.

Legally, BC is a write off for both hunting and fishing. I looked into a few caribou hunts and salmon charters, and given the ongoing nonsense, there’s no way I’d put money down.

It’ll be interesting when the more equals try to pull up to a resident. Only a matter of time till that powder keg gets lit.

Race based laws have no business existing in this century.

So I guess the Federal Government can quit spending money on Fish Hatcheries given that the now end user will not be paying any Taxes on the very fish that they catch that came from the said Hatchery!

In Fact, DFO can trash its whole budget for the BC Coast now that this announcement has been made!
