Default Jasper, barbless hooks or not

After a 30 years hiatus we are planning a return to fishing Jasper this summer. Do we need single barbless hooks or can we use our old treble/barbed?

Trebled, barbed are still good - but no lead sinkers or lead-weighted flies, and no bait. That means no more 'Worm and a Wabler' at Maligne!

Maybe you can, but why would you? Surely after 30 years you have mastered the technique.

You shouldn't even need a hook if you're any good...

Yeah? Not every fish is caught on a fly with 12/14/16 hook. People do fish with spinning tackle and bait casters using spoons, crankbaits, jerkbaits that come with multiple treble hooks (max 3 treble hooks in AB). Some even attach additional trebles (stingers) on their lures (tube jigs for example). Is that amazing to you or do you not get out much?

Take the challenge and don't use barbed hooks. It is fun and might test your skill on the jumpers.

I fish all sort of ways; flies, spoons, jigs, baits, trolling etc. Everytime I buy a lure with a treble hook on it, it gets cut off and replaced with a single which often has the barb pinched. I've never cared for trebles, always considered them as antiquated and a pain in the ass.

Besides not being condusive to releasing fish if desired, they tangle easy, pose a hazard when dealing with a feisty fish and I've honestly never seen the need for them. My hook up rate really didn't go down a noticeable amount after I stopped using trebles.

The additional challenge of staying connected to a strong and acrobatic fish using a single barbless hook is fun too. Fishing isn't a meat market to me, I really don't place any value on how many fish I come home with. More and more often, I just end up releasing fish anyways.

So you just like to torment the fish for your own pleasure?

Dam the treble I tell my buddy. But I catch more fish says he. Maybe, but I still hold the largest in all species. Whatever.

Barbless great for C&R

Single vs treble both have flaws and advantages to fish survival with C&R. Things are far more complicated then one point vs 3.

But whatever makes you feel better lol
