As others have said here in the recent past, the determination of which units to require testing or not has nothing to do with food safety. Certain units where CWD is well-established were taken off the list for mandatory testing, presumably because of a lack of resources necessary to continue testing every animal taken in those areas. Testing resources are apparently being concentrated more on units at the edge of known CWD areas in order to monitor the spread of the disease to new areas.
If you are not comfortable with the risk of eating a CWD-positive animal, you should get them tested.
