Default Ammo selection

Whenever I stroll through the big box outdoors stores(cabelas) I usually grab a box of ammo or two for good measure. I am a new 30-06 owner, as I previously only hunted with the 308, so now I pick up some 30-06 boxes from time to time. Trying to make a short story short, I now notice the ever popular 30-06 has the worst selection for boxed ammo, where as the 308 and 300 mag have unreal selection of varying brands. Anyone know why this is? And why the 30-06 boxes are only stocked in a couple of options? There is 7 or 8 types of federal 308 and about 3 types of 3006, what the hell eh. One would think the equally popular 308 would have the same selection. Thanks.

The .30-06 has been getting it done for 100 years and they are trying to match that proven performance with similar ammo from back in the day so there is no reason for the fancy stuff.

To be honest, probably most guys buy the Remington Core Lokts, power points or federal blue box.

You might be seeing some of the .308 target ammo or “long range” ammo and maybe the same for the .300 win mag. The .30-06 doesn’t really have that following

Hornady lists 17 offerings and Federal 35 for the 30-06.
And that is only 2 companies.
Ever hear of Covid and ammo shortages?

No lack of manufacturer options of 308 or 30-06 ammo, but it sure is hit or miss as to what is on the shelves for any ammunition these days. Even worse for reloading components. Seems various stores get in a shipment of ammo in a particular brand or caliber for no rhyme or reason, but nothing of others. With all the shortages and hoarding, whatever comes in is gone in days (or hours in the case of some powders and projectiles).

It’s only going to get spottier, wait till late August when the sight in a week or two before the season gang, come to the grim realization that there isn’t any ammo to be had.

The truth is diddly squat is coming north from the USA, and what is showing up now is old stock. Once it’s dried up, it’s going to be tough going.

Shelves are bare Stateside, and prices are insane down there for what is left.

Conduct yourselves accordingly!
