Default Wabamun?

Good morning. I have a cousin who is 75 years young, and has decided to get into ice fishing. He has just recently purchased an auger and underwater camera. He’s been to Pigeon 3 times and has yet to catch a fish. Granted, he’s not the greatest ice fisherman by any means, but at his age he likes getting out. I mentioned going to Wabamun. I would take him for a tour, but am still recovering from shoulder surgery and ice fishing is a no go for a while yet. I used to fish Wabamun a lot back in the 80’s for whites, but haven’t been there for quite a while now. He doesn’t care what he catches, but it would be nice for him to have some better luck. Can anybody give me some tips on where and how that I can pass on to him? Thank you for your help.

Honestly just walk out far enough and drill a few holes. Drop a jig in with a minnow and they'll come. They're like rats at that lake!

That’s exactly what I’ve been telling him to do. 1/8 oz. jig and minnow. Keep it within a foot of the bottom. I think he just needs some luck. LOL.

Another option is the sailing club, which is just west of town maybe 3-5km. I personally havnt had a lot of success @ the townsite. The last 2 outings, at the sailing club, I was with the kids but each time we landed a few and had 10+ bites/bells go off. There is a launch at the sailing club as well. Walk straight out 3-500 yards.

He caught his first fish of the year today at Pigeon. A small pike. At least it’s something. HA.

Can’t comment on fallis. I drove on at sailing club. 18” of ice. Some walking on, some driving. (This was last week btw)

+1. I'm a first year ice fisherman and took some of the advice from the forum and went to Wab. Used jigs with frozen smelts and caught about 12-15 pikes and walleyes in 3 hours

Great lake to practice hook setting and getting interested in the sport, IMO

Maybe so. Like I said, he not the best fisherman, but he enjoys getting out of the city and enjoying the day.

i tried to respond to your PM but whenever i send a msg, it doesn't seem to send - not sure what's going on but i basically went about 500m south of the pier at Wab at 10 feet of water. Found some structure (rocks and log) with sandy bottom and it worked. Mind you, the second time i went, I only caught two walleyes in 3 hours.

Has anyone been out on Wabamun lately? Looking to head out that way a few times this week ahead, hoping for some reports!
