can beat that with a 243win and an 80gr ttsx all day long and twice on weekends @3500fps ... the .25's are all in the trunk dead compared to the ballistics of 6mm / 6.5mm / 7mm bullets

How does a .243 beat a .25-06 with 80 or 100 gr bullets?
Does a .243 really push an 80gr at 3500 fps?

6.5 simply due to the slightly bigger frontal diameter and the option to use heavier bullets...

The 25-06 might not have bullets available with the BC's of the current 6's and 6.5's but as a deer cartridge it's very good out to as far as most shoot. With 120's it's faster than the 6.5 CM and holds up quite well to 400 yards.
I have both the 6.5 Creed and the 25-06.
With a 100 grain bullet I think of the 25-06 as sort of a supercharged 243 out to 400 yards or so and then a slippery .243" slug might take over the trajectory race. Most don't shoot game further out than that on a regular basis unless they are well practiced in the activity.

Many good reply’s.
I vote for the 6.5 creedmoor, or a 260 rem if it has a 1-8” or faster twist. 6.5 creedmoor probably has the most available factory ammo (I know you said you handload, as do I, but it is nice to be able to grab a box off the shelf if need be) of the 6’s and 6.5’s, rivalled maybe by 243 but I’d bet most big stores have more 6.5cm on the shelf.
I also like 243 win, but most factory rifles don’t have a fast enough twist rate to use the high bc bullets.
I would also recommend considering what bullet you want to use while making your choice. I started out with 6.5’s while lusting after the bc’s of the eld-x bullets. I have recently decided to try copper bullets and am excited to try the 120 Nosler e-tip. What I’m saying is compare potential projectiles you may want to use in both 6mm and 6.5mm.
Let us know what you go with! Oh, have you picked a rifle yet? That’s another fun decision!

Thank you everyone for your replies, lot's of great idea's and they helped me select what I believe will work best for my needs, being realistic.
I dropped the rifle off today at the gunsmith and will be using an Alberta barrel maker. Brought in pieces I have collected over the past while to put together, a SA LH CDL stock, SA LH Remington action, TriggerTech Trigger.
I'll post pictures when it is done and I'll keep the caliber quiet 'till then, it was one mentioned a few times though!
Thanks everyone,
Mark

buncha a-holes here
as for commercially available, south of the border i'm sure it is, they are a dime a dozen down there, bulk ammo, barnes, remington, hornady, federal (including gold medal match) etc.
my guess is he's building a 6mm Creedmoor, good choice
a 21st century .243, probably not as common as it should be, the dang 6.5 big brother stealing some well deserved thunder perhaps

Lmao The poster said between 6mm and 6.5. Hello
I know the 7mm beats the 257 duh. Smoke another one bud.
And I'm getting. 25 of an inch with them loaded up to 3800 fps.

My recommendation is to get something you like, something different that stimulates you and enjoy shooting it.
Sure you might get more performance with a CM over some other 6.5's but them you might as well step up the performance (and the punishment) and get the 6.5-300 WBY
You can race all you want ….more energy, more velocity, more heavy metal rock and roll thunder ………… doesn't matter at some point does it?
But then again - that's not the point.
My dad had a swede he loved and I loved shooting it too - my cousin still hunts with it and shoots it …….. that's my recomendation

anybody ever think about wildcatting a 25 WSM up to 6.5? heavy bullets would be almost as long as the case. other than that it should be a fairly decent round, good velocity with medium short barrel life.

Been there done that with two different rifles back when the Shortmags first came out, as well and the 6.5WSSM and the 6.5 SAUM.
They are all fun if one does not mind sorting brass, resizing and fire forming ,etc.
These days most guys are just as likely to go wit the 6.5PRC.....

I hunt with my rifles vs being a paper puncher so 6.5 doesn't do a bunch for me when 90% of shots are 300yds and under. Had a Creedmoor for a year then asked myself why and sold it.
If I HAD to choose a 6.5? Probably the 26 Nosler or PRC.

Yup for straight hunting just about anything would do, and lots to like about something really fast with those mono's.
I was curious for a second what a 25-06 running those ttsx 80's at 3550 fps would look like, pretty neat a 300 yard zero, 350 pbr, 8" drop at 400 means you're on fur to 400. Screams hunting only rig, one trick pony for sure and would be effective. Bullet might be a little light for elk/moose? SD certainly isn't there but made up for with that wicked velocity.
Out of curiosity i compared it to the little 6.5 Grendel, silly i know. The Grendel having a similar hold on fur to i dunno 275 maybe with pbr of about 240 with a 200 yard zero (very 308 like trajectory).
The interesting differences were that the 6.5 Grendel could also do 400 yard work like the one trick pony but it does it with 46% less recoil and who knows how much more barrel life for any other shooting one may like to do outside of hunting. At 400 yards the screamer had 12.7" wind drift and the little Grendel only 11", just have to dial up or reticle for the elevation differences is all and lot of argument when you're that far out you've got the time and likely using a rangefinder anyway. The Grendel still over 2000 fps past 425 yards with a much higher SD and BC, so while it didn't start like a rocket, it keeps what its starts with very well.
Nah, i'll take the Grendel, and shoot the shat out of it anytime i like, targets, coyotes, take people shooting, and no reloading even necessary. It will easily do anything i need for big game, will ensure i do my part too. If i can't do well with it then i'm a big ole ***** for sure. And Grendel premium ammo is about same price as an old short action standard bottom pointed soft point ammo...bout $32/box.
But...this thread the ask was for combo 400 yard deer max and 500 yard target max...6mm or 6.5mm only choice. Only later did the OP mention he'd like to see ammo readily available on the shelf wherever he goes as well. I think the easy buttons are 6.5 CM (easy first place choice) then 6 CM and then the really smart choices would be 6.5 Grendel (call it the 6.5 CM short) or the new 6 ARC (the 6 CM short) . South of the border you'll find Grendel ammo anywhere, and it won't be long the 6 ARC ammo will be everywhere too as they are both AR cartridges and the USA is AR crazy, just in Canada it will be a little more sparse finding the ammo on the shelves but it's not too hard.
Then the OP alluded to having some parts already, so sounded like a standard short action to me which would rule out the Grendel/ARC...so for sure he's going between the two Creedmoor's. I think he should do the 6 for his needs, for his limits, the 6 should do better than the 6.5.

I'm gonna throw in a vote for the 6.5ManBun. (Pretty sure the Rem or Swede can do the same thing)
I think that it is important to practise shooting in order to help make clean kills on game. Any practice is better than nothing. A 22LR helps. A 223 is better. IMO, the 6.5 can make an even better practice round
I grabbed a 6.5Cr. Bullets such as SST's and Gamechangers, are available that have nearly identical BC's to heavier, larger caliber bullets that cost more than twice as much. I've been able to develop loads that have nearly identical ballistics to the loads that I hunt with. Same trajectory and more importantly to me, the same wind drift. So now, when I'm at the range shooting the 6.5, I'm getting practice with a round that performs the same as my hunting rounds.
Cheaper bullets. Less powder. Save the wear and tear on the hunting rifle.

Although I think the 6.5 prc is a much cooler round than the cm you are going to have a really tough time fitting it in the Rem 700 short action mag box. Max COAL is 2.955”, mag box is 2.84”. Seating deep would work against getting the performance you want.

Is a 6.5prc a magnum? Maybe yes, but lower recoiling one? Does magnum mean over 25ft recoil or what.
Does boltface?
Just was reading the original post and it was said it had to be a non magnum.

6.5 PRC would be rippa fun but if going down to one rifle it will eat the barrel faster than the Creed.
And if youre punchin paper more than critters the cost favours the Creed.
But this is coming from a 243 shooter
