It doesn’t matter if the Soilers get any picks. They are unable to DEVELOP them and some even refuse to sign and leave for nothing—see Riley Nash for an example. The Soilers inability to attract decent free agents is legendary.

No kidding. Two 29 yr olds and the other 30. One of those for the Hart trophy winner? Sheesh.
Quinn Hughes or Cale Makar would be the only Dmen I'd consider for Drai and it'd still be a hard pull to swallow. His contract is a bargain right now.

Draisaitl and McJesus seem to be developing just fine. Bear? Jones? Yamamoto?
You're right on Nash tho. His 5 goals and 9 assists were missed desperately this year and his 5 games/no goals in the playoffs to date definitely would have gotten the Oilers over the hump vs the Hawks.
Couple of names for you while we're on the legendary team building theme? Martin St Louis and Brett Hull?
How's Adam Fox 42 points looking these days? Dang huh?
I don't actually think you're Dead...Moose, but there's hard evidence your melon took one helluva whack. Loosened up your rack a little methinks.

Where was he the last time the Oilers rag dolled half the Flames team on that 8-3 thrashing the Flames took?

Obviously saving it for the playoffs, something the Oilers don't need to do.

Go hang out at the golf course. Maybe you can wash some Oilers balls?

Que the infamous 14 year statement “The future looks bright”. The Oilers group needs to start printing t shirts with this on them...

This will get you a lengthy suspension every single time. If it is a pattern then you are gone. Quite simple actually.

I am sure if you polled the league GM's every single one of them would have done the same deal at the same time. Edmonton got out from under an anchor of a contract, plus moved a person out of the dressing room that reportedly wasn't happy, and have a veteran goal scorer that looked pretty motivated on the ice and had some success vs the year prior.
Even with hindsight, I say do the same deal every darn time. If Calgary can win with Looch good for them, but they are still on the hook for his cap hit for a LONG time and have to protect him in the Seattle entry draft. Also something that could get a team in to trouble.

Hopefully in the next CBA, the loophole that allows US college players to become free agents upon graduation gets plugged.
Quote:
If a Player drafted at age 18 or 19 is a bona fide college student at the time of his selection in the Entry Draft, or becomes a bona fide college student prior to the first June 1 following his selection in the Entry Draft, and remains a bona fide college student through the graduation of his college class, his drafting Club shall retain the exclusive right of negotiation for his services through and including the August 15 following the graduation of his college class. The Club need not make a Bona Fide Offer to such Player to retain such rights.
|
Adam Fox let Calgary know that he had no interest in signing with them. Calgary bundled Fox, Ferland and Dougie Hamilton for Hanafin and Lindholm. I would think that Calgary is liking that trade.
Fox balked at signing with Carolina. Carolina dealt Fox to the Rangers for a couple of picks.
Oilers faced a similar situation with John Marino, getting a 6th rounder from Pittsburg. Right now, that trade is looking pretty lopsided.
Like I said, hopefully the next CBA changes the rules around free agency for US college players.

There was certainly media discussion about Looch having a gentleman's agreement to go to Seattle as he's from the lower mainland. People hung up on his contract are missing the impact a couple series wins would do for the Flames. There's been a meaningful playoff drought in these parts for a long time. A whole summer of discussing success vs failure makes a big difference to advertisers.
Also don't discount the value of the third round pick.
Oiler fanboys notice he was 69% in the face-off circle also?? GFG

After 7 years he's back. Good for Looch. He was a difference maker back in the day.

Can’t believe we’re still talking about this lol. At the time it was a win for both clubs. We can debate this years down road when both contracts done. Both players are serving their purpose. In mean time think both clubs were happy with the change of scenery. All i want for Xmas is a flames/oilers playoff series. Been way too long. Even the old days even during Oiler hay day. Fun series!!!

Assuming Seattle would even want him yes? If they don't and Tree cant move him by retaining a big chunk of his contract for next to nothing in return, you own him and could lose a Dooby or Mangy Pannini type instead.

I would think Calgary didn't like having to make that trade. Gave up 2 Dmen better than the one they gòt in return and gave up some toughness in Ferland. I like that player.
Lindholm has fit in well but a stud Dman like Fox is an extremely valuable asset. I'd venture Flames really didn't want to lose him because most folks that follow the game closely had him pegged.
Marino's a meh with Jones, Bouchard, and Broberg in the wings and Bear looking like a very strong asset for the future.

Really want to see them play the Canucks. West coasters looked like the best Canadian team right out of the gate.

Rumour has it that the Flames won’t leave Lucic unprotected to go to Seattle because he’s too valuable to the team.

This is the most comprehensive take on the Neal Lucic trade I have seen yet. It seems to answer all the questions.
