Powder suggestions for 7-08 Rem
I recently acquired a 7-08, hoping to work up a load and hunt with it this year. Planning on trying the 150gr ELD-X...any recommendations for powder choice? I have a pretty good selection of powder and primers on hand.
Also have some 140gr and 150gr Nosler Ballistic Tips, but will try the ELD-X first. Side note, the gun is a 20" barrel so not sure what kind of velocity they will achieve.

When I tried nosler partitions 150 gr. in my 7-08 with varget and cci large 200 primers I couldn’t get a decent group. Tried 140 gr accubonds with same powder and primer. Groups now clover and performs really well, don’t know what my velocity is, haven’t shot it with the magneto yet.

With 150gr eldx, I’ve had good results with varget, h414 and h380.
I’ve just settled on using varget now as it gives me my best results with 140s as well, and I’m trying to simplify how much crap I have on my bench.

General rules of thumb I follow for loading for all cartridges, pick the slowest powder that gives you maximum velocity and try it first. In the 7-08 that would be H414 or H4350. If you want to shoot reduced loads for use by kids that are learning work up some loads with 4895. If you have a barrel that is on the short side move to a slightly faster powder than 414 or 4350. Let us know how you make out.
Remember, seating depth can affect your groups as much or more than powder or bullet selection.

My one 7-08 has used WW760/CCI250 for hunting w/140 Nos for the last 30+ yrs, it runs 2860 on a 22" bbl. Other bullets get whatever I feel like trying in it for powder. That gun will hit 2900+ on max loads.
The new one barely broke 2700 within .5gr on the same load and a cci200 or an f210, have CCI250/F215 loads to try yet, to see if it will crack 2800 or not. Also tried RL19 w/CCI200, didn't achieve velocity yet, haven't run either powder to max yet, that is also part of what is loaded and needs to be checked out yet in it. I was within 1.5gr of max though, so not really holding up a lot of hope on them achieving 2800+. Chamber on the new one is about .002 shorter according to shoulder measurement on fired brass. Rem 140PSP factory load was lower velocity too, under 2800.. No pressure signs so far.
Also have IMR4350, H4350, RL17 I can try in it, and if need be 4320, 4064 and some VV powders I can try. I should check to see if RL16 is avail again yet, it appears to have good possibilities. Been trying powders that have loads above 45gr and are showing capability of 2800+, that was the guideline I am working from.
So, as you can see, guns vary.
