Earthquake in Sylvan?
Just heard there was a 4.6 earthquake in Sylvan Lake at 5:55am today, knocking out power to the whole town? Anyone have any more details?

Yep. Gave the house a good shake. Woke me up wondering what hit the house. Went on Facebook and it was everywhere. Power was out for about 1.5 hrs.

Excuse me while I go puke.

why should fracturing be banned?
Because of an earth quake that possibly has absolutely zero to do with hydraulic fracturing?
Early reports say they are looking into it to see if there was any activity in the area that contributed to it, but nothing remotely close to definitive?

Don’t know enough about it to say one way or the other myself. Was hoping you could educate us that know very little on the subject. Btw I think he said it in sarcasm.

I think that it has been so cold for so long that mother nature just had to let out a good snap. We didn't feel a thing 4 miles north of the lake, didn't even wake the dog up. D.H.

Not saying that it was hydraulic fracking BUT Vista Energy was fracking in the area and has since stopped operations.
I know O&G says fracking shouldn't effect the water table or ground water, but personally Id rather have any fracking occur far away from where i'm living. Not really worried about earthquakes. Lots of country's (France) and even some provinces have banned fracking all together.

That's what first came to my mind. Is it ice quakes or frost quakes? Not that it matters.

That was my first though as well. Frostquakes register on the richter scale too, guess it just depends "how" it happened if you want to be technical and classify it as an earthquake or frostquake

The earthquake occurred about a kilometer below the surface according to the article I posted. Little too deep for frost.

The day "Ice Quakes" registers 4.6 and knocks the power out for 1.5 hours is the day I finally start to believe the crap I read on here or the internet.

I have lots of first hand knowledge, care to educate me on how you ruled out a frac-caused shift?
Seems fairly likely to me actually, considering the rather shallow depth (1 km) and the fact that Vesta was currently frac-ing in the immediate area and ceased operations immediately following the quake.
Also, there has been no other E.Q. activity in the area in the last 30 days.
http://earthquakescanada.nrcan.gc.ca/index-en.php
Even with all that I will let the studies come out before pointing a finger in blame.
I just can't believe how hard people with no evidence to prove their opinion will condemn those with evidence of theirs....

I agree with waiting for the study, but I'm pretty sure ANY drilling/completing in the area would cease immediately.

Every darn time something like this happens, people freak out and start blaming this, that and the other thing.
IMO everyone should really just try to relax and make the most of the next 12 years.
