Default Making Steel Rust

Anyone ever make steel rust on purpose before?

Making a pig roaster/bbq and I have a weeping willow/bullrush design on the back that I want to rust as the finish for it. The rest of the bbq is painted with high temp paint.

Just looking if anyone has done this before. Many different ways o the Google machine.....looking for some first hand knowledge.

I use muratic acid and hydrogen peroxide. Google that combo and there are lots of videos and information on it.

You can get muratic acid at lots of places, Canadian tire, Home Depot, Lowe’s. It is used for etching concrete.

Hydrochloric acid can be purchased at concrete supply stores, such as Unicon, National, etc.

The project sounds quite interesting. Pictures would be great OP!

Bare Corten steel would make an interesting material for an outdoor oven

In my experience vinegar will darken the metal or etch it and slowly rust it.

Salt water will rust it just takes longer.

If i needed to rust something faster, muratic acid would be my go to.

Seems like the heavy salt water in the Oil formations can rust something overnight. Trymore salt.

Salt doesn't make anything rust, it is only an electrolyte which means it let's electrons flow through it, but it is necessary for corrosion(rust). The normal "rust" we see if oxygen corrosion. Typical oilfield corrosion is hydrogen sulfide or carbon dioxide corrosion. Both of which need a electrolyte ("salt" in the brine or produced water) for corrosion to occur. When dissolved in water, H2S and CO2 form acid which cause the corrosion.

Any strong acid or base can cause corrosion, hence the corrosive warning labels on the bottles. Some will do it faster and other slower depending on the composition of your metal.

Corrosion is a huge, huge, huge industry. Easily billions if not trillions of dollars.

Use ferric chloride. Its much less dangerous to work with. Muratic will rust everything in your shop. I use ferric to etch my Damascus blues or for patina on a carbon blade.

Painting the BBQ and then sandblasting the pattern using a stencil works well if you're looking for a consistent rust colour over time. Leaving the mill scale on and using acid or other agent can give you some variations if that's what you're looking for. Not sure exactly what design you're looking for, but using a stencil in any event would be a good thing IMO using a small synthetic brush for application.

Ferric chloride is only muratic or hydrocloric acid almost saturated with iron.

If you haven't built it yet, use Corten Steel when you do. Corten (also called weathering steel) is made to rust. If you need some, send me a PM, I can probably get you some fairly cheap.
