Default Stocking Dugout

Where is a good place to buy Rainbow or Brook trout for the dugout around Airdrie?
I got my Rec License and they suggested a few places, no one seems to return calls?

Thanks.
Gabby

X2 on Smoky Trout Farm. Great people and healthy fish. There is another ad in the Central Alberta Buy and Sell but I don't know anything about the Company.

If you have your Licence for your pond, you should get an order in ASAP. There seems to be always a shortage of available fish.

How do you get a license? I don't even know what to look for or how to search.

Smoky Trout Farm is between Red Deer and Sylvan Lake on the old hwy 11. They are just North of the hwy. Easy to find.

Thanks. I tried to find it on there but I can't see anything. Do you just apply for a license? What's it called?

Default Application

You can go online and print the Recreational application ( if it's just for recreation) out, fill it in and e-mail it to, Janice.wilson@gov.ab.ca

They will call you and go thru your application with you, the guy that called me was very helpful and very knowledgeable.

Thanks for all the replies!!

Gabby

When applying ask for rainbow, brook and brown. (Janice may even prompt you to do that anyways).

I just renewed mine in 2018 and she added brook and brown for me. Turns out I actually prefer the brookies now to the rainbows. They don’t get as massive, but in my pond they bite better.

That's because the aquaculture study is at Lethbridge College.

I see in Alberta you can stock your pond with freshwater prawns too. I wonder if any of the folks on here with stocked dugouts have tried stocking prawns instead of trout? Looks like they can grow pretty good sized. I think the commercial operators farm prawns in tanks but a dugout full for private consumption would be great.

Welcome to the forum.

Too bad only commercial B licencing is allowed. A person can get 6 to 12 hundred pounds of prawns per acre.

sorry for the derail Gabby.
