Up grade for the Ruger 10/22
The Ruger 10/22, a very popular gopher rifle, with a adams and bennett barrel ,an after market trigger, a nikon pro staff 22 rimfire scope, then install a shell catcher. Now you have a 22 lr rifle very accurate out to 100m, the genius of the 10 shot flush mag. A semi auto you can keep to your shoulder for 10 quick kills.
Very good for those 300-400 plus days.

And it will retain some value.
As for keeping your rifle shouldered, that is true with most actions.

10/22
Yes of course, But because of the thousands of people that already own the 10/22, and want to upgrade to a very accurate rifle--Matter of fact, my CZ, 455 and other 22lr rifles,no match for for this ultimate, gopher killer. Its just to bad they banned the 20-25 shot magazine, with these i used a loading hopper for quick hands free reloading.

10/22
I bought the Ruger 10/22 2nd hand for less than $100, the target barrel and stock about $130, the after market trigger less than $100, the nikon scope a gift, The loading hopper with 20 round mags not a lot.
A small investment compared to the CZ 455, marlin, henry, etc
The 10/22 with upgrades is a highly effective rifle, when the gophers are plentiful. Even more so than just out of the box.

Yes, that is much less than a VQ. I would have assumed an aftermarket barrel would be in the $500 Range and a trigger group about $250 and stocks can be pricey. Sounds like you put together a good rig for about $300 which is not the norm. How does it group at 50m?

10/22
The barrel and stock came as a kit, of course that some time ago,at 50 meters on a bench rest, less than 1/2 in.
A few years ago I got a tip on extreme gophers infestation in sask around Cadilac. Took a trip out there, found a section of farm, never saw so many gophers.
When the smoked cleared, in one day I estimated 800-900 gophers, with 20round mags and a loading hopper, the effectiveness of the semi auto was apparent, the bolt actions never used..
This was about rapid fire body count, the same reason the military gave up the bolt action.
The 10/22 worth an up grade, very reliable, with few misfires,I had a pull thru along soaked in barrel cleaning when any binding occured.

Consistent 5 shot groups under 1/2” @ 50M is very good for a semi-auto action. I don’t do much RimFire at the Range (just at this time of the year) so have seen only a limited number of 10/22 with upgrades ... but none of those shot as well as your build. Best hang on to that one!

If you are getting 1/2" groups at 50m with a ruger 10/22 semi - don't change darn a thing. You own a unicorn. Maybe a golden unicorn.
This is, by far, the best I have heard at 50m for "mid market" semi 22LR like the 10/22.
I've owned a few 10/22's in various configurations and I would be puffing out my chest and giving everyone at the range a wink n' gun If I were shoot less than 1 MOA with a 10/22.
Most quality 22LR bolts are hard pressed to do that. Keep that golden unicorn - enjoy it.

I built two 10/22s that would shoot sub 1/2" at 50m, and my Volquartsen averaged better than that. My multiple CZ 452 rifles also shot sub 1/2" , at least as good as my 10/22 builds. None of my semi autos would shoot with any of my Anschutz rifles, either my several 54 actions , or my Fortner action. As for needing a semi auto to shoot ground squirrels, I would love to find a field where I couldn't shoot fast enough with a bolt action. I have shot a brick of 22lr loads in a few hours, shooting ground squirrels, with a bolt action.

It’s not hard to sink a $1000 into a 10/22 but when you go to sell it don’t expect more than about 40 cents on the dollar. Best bang for your buck would be buying a volquartsen if you want an accurate semi auto.

I was just poking around on Rimfire Central yesterday, it seems 0.50" groups at 50m are pretty common for custom 10/22s. That is accurate to be sure, but when guys on RC have squeezed even 0.25" out of them 0.50" isn't record setting.

I bought a 10/22 ss/laminate on sale quite a few years back, and the first thing I did was order a complete Volquartsen trigger group with extended mag release. I had planned on putting a custom barrel on it, but quite frankly it shot so good with just the trigger upgrade I didn't see the point. It is deadly accurate on gophers out to 100 yards, I have a Bushnell 3200 3-9x 40mm scope on it and it's just dandy. I don't know what kind of 'groups' i'd get out of it at 50 or 100 yards, I just know that tossing the mediocre stock trigger and putting the VQ in there made all the difference. I also put a nylon bolt recoil buffer in, quiets it down and seems to run smoother? Anyway, simple upgrade, cost me $200 US at the time from rimfire sports, and it was money well spent. Love it.

I put a Kidd trigger kit in my 10/22. Amazing upgrade over the factory trigger. Didn't seem to be worth it to mess around with the Ruger BX-25 drop in when the Kidd kit is proven and less than $50 more.

10/22
With the banning of the 20, 25, round magazines I am back on an even plane with my hunting pards, the reloading with a hopper gave me the advantage over my bolt action shooting pards.
Accurate is of course important, but the pin point of the custom rifle is not required for everyday gopher shooting. Most gophers shot at less than 70m down to 5m.
I can remember shooting 21 gophers with a 20 round clip in less than two minutes,of course it was more or less point blank, with the young ones out.
Today I shot 206 by the rosebud with the 10/22, could of shot the same with a bolt---later in the day its fun to bring out the CZ and smack a few at 100m plus.

Love the 10/22's period....what a great rifle with a million type of upgrades etc that never stop, seen some beauty rifles over the years...except mine which is butt ugly but 1/2" at 50 yards keeps me happy.

The 10/22
The 10/22 out of the box, never won any beauty contests, put a bull barrel on, and your right dawg gone butt ugly. But this is a matter of close range eradiicaton of a meadow destroying vermin. The 10/22 fills the bill, bang it around the truck, no fancy stock, tough as nails, reliable, shoots were you point. This gun made for gopher shooting. Just got inside the gate this am,in no time flat had 10 wigglers--I soo miss those 20-25 round mags.
