555 yards.
It is really amazing how much steel varmint bullets will bore through. My friend had a 3/4" X 3" Diameter gong welded on to another one as a base siting on a post at 100 Meters at his range. I had seen the 110 Speer TNT nearly take the head off of a deer at 100 yards at 3250-3300 fps from my 7mm08. When I shot at the 3/4 mild steel gong it fell off the post and I was certain that the bullet had barely made a mark. However when I went to put it back on the post I was surprised to find a hole, about .284", drilled right through. My son made some gopher targets, from high quality steel, that were meant to swing up when hit with a 22 LR. When the last target was hit they would all reset but they were too heavy for the 22, even at point blank range where shrapnel was directed back towards the shooter, which hardly left a mark on the steel. I set one out at 100 yards and shot the first gopher only to have the target swing slightly back and forth. I thought that they were too heavy for the 110 grain bullet when I found the same with all three. When I went to retrieve the target I found a neat hole drilled through each one. I set them out at 200 yards and found the same. I do wish that I would have tested them to see where they would have worked with the 7mm-08.

Partial inconclusive amusing results...to be continued Sunday
So funny story....
I shot at one distance and smoked a hole through as you saw in the earlier pictures. Then I set it up at the second range and it stopped the bullet in the pan. Well that was kinda cool but considering I hit a ridge on the edge of the pan I thought I’d shoot the pan again...I’ll be darned if I didn’t hit the ridge again. Gonna be gone sat. So hope to get one more shot more centered on Sunday before I post the results. Here’s a couple pictures.

Kind of like hitting a rib when shooting a coyote . A friend has shot over 50 coyotes using Hornady 32 Z-Max bullets and 32 grain Sierra BK "s at about 3850. All have been pass trough's, leaving a bullet size exit when shot through the lungs at 190 yards. One shot quartering to and one quartering away at nearly 300 yards were pass trough's as well. The coyotes were all pretty much bang flops which leads me to believe that Hydrostatic or Hydraulic shock is coming into play. I always thought those exploding gophers were due to the bullets exploding but maybe not? .
Your experiment is really a good idea and look forward to the results. You will have to try to hit the pan closer to the center where there are no ribs.

Speed kills at least in the gopher patch.

It’s tricky to hit the center over 100 yards. 😜

Here is a update.
Anyone that said 400 yards or less is out. That was the yardage I took the first shot at and it easily punched a hole through it. Here is the 400 yard picture again.

Update:
If you said 500 yards or less, your out also.
Just for some extra fun I found some 40gr vmax I had in s drawer and they also as I expected drilled a perfect hole at 400 yrds.

Sry just haven’t had time to go shoot. Getting out there now and it’s tricky in any kinda wind.

Since I hit the rim twice I haven’t been able to get back out. Fields are stinking muddy now too.

More results.
I’ll tell you as much as I know. The 2 shots that hit the edge and were stopped were at 600yards.
As soon as I can I’ll try to get back out for a more centered shot at 600 and see if I can push them through.

My guess was 601 for a pass through and 602 was a dent. Just saying. I'm pretty close so far.

I bet even a 22LR would punch right through it at 50 and probably leave a decent sized dimple at 100.
edit - sorry didn't see second page of thread .... so I guess I cheated .... lol

I’ll shoot it at 50yrds with a .22 when I get a chance. Maybe at 50yrds but doubt it at 100yrds.

Final results
Finally got back out and managed to not hit the rim of the pan. I thought the results are very interesting.
At 400 yards both the Federal Nosler Ballistic Tip 40 gr.
and the Hornady Vmax 40 grain easily punched through the pan.
NEXT
I hit the rim twice at 600 yards with the Nosler and they did not
go through but we’re stuck in the pan. Since I hit the rim I wanted to try again and after a while I was finally able to get back out and managed to get 2 shots more towards the center. One went through and one stopped in the pan.
Since one went through and one was caught at 600 I’m calling it at
600 YARDS ON THE NOSE.
So all in all a stinger .22lr at 50 yards has about the same hit power as a .204 at 600 yards.
Only 8 photos to a post so I will continue it in the next post.

Results Continued
And as a Bonus Question what would a .22LR do to the same pan at 50yrds or 100 yrds. I only shot it at 50 yards and this told the story. I used 2 different ammos. The slower Winchester ammo at 1280fps ammo bounced off. Then I tried the faster CCI stinger ammo at 1640fps. One shot went through and one shot was stopped in the pan.
Love love love the .204 Ruger
