Dog bite quarantine.
I'm curious if anyone has owned a dog that bit someone breaking the skin and the dog was put into the mandatory 10-14 day quarantine? Was there a daily charge/fee for the dog being in quarantine?

Yes, any diseases. They are only forced into quarantine if the bite breaks the skin. This is all as per Alberta Health.

About 6 years ago I had a dog that bit someone. It was quarantined for that same period but there was no charge or fee. Once the time frame came we were notified that everything was ok. Our dog stayed at our house the whole time and we were not allowed to take it to any public places for those days. We lived near crown land and were able to take her there for walks. Not sure if anything has changed since then.

Had a dog bite and break skin, while at a pet store. EMT's didn't take any info nor did they keep the dog or request quarantine.
So not sure if it's actually an Alberta health requirement or what exactly...

Thanks guys, it is a requirement once/if the victim gets a tetanus shot.

If I had a dog bite someone unprovoked and break the skin, there would be no reason to worry about quarantine......

Yes there is
Even if the animal is to be put down, the vet needs to know if the dog has rabies. That way the victim is not treated for a disease that he doesn't have.
I believe that it takes 14 days to be sure.

If the rabies shots are up to date, how slim would the odds be of it having rabies?

Correct, we will be putting the dog down as soon as we are able but feel we owe it to the victim to follow the process. Turns out the rabies vaccination has expired.

Vaccination has expired.
The biology on this one is not settled. Traditional knowledge says once vaccinated you are immune for life. I'm not sure how these "expired" ones got started but with rabies better sure than sorry.

The biology isn't conclusive because they have subject thats are all over the place with vaccination. Some have lasted long term. Some show no immunity 5 years later. Some never.
There are lots of variables.

It is also mandatory to report incident to RCMP. Fines or arrests can follow. Should the animal bite again, it is documented and euthanasia follows that.

RCMP are contacted by Alberta Health after the victims first hospital visit. This dog will not be getting another chance to bite.

For real? Dogs shouldn't bite that's a given. But unless the person suffered irreparable harm because of it and it will affect the rest of their life in a real and meaningful way why would you sue? Destroying the dog should be enough. I got bit when I was a kid playing tag at the lake. Ran past my uncle's trailer and his gr got me on the arm. I'm fine.
What's next sue my brother when he Knicks me with a knife while skining an animal.

My sister was bit in the face by a neighbours dog when she was 7, 133 stitches, the dog was a known biter but they kept it anyway and it bit several other kids before my sister, back then there weren't laws about reporting this, but anyway, i'm a little sensitive to anyone that has an aggressive dog and they known they are aggressive. Why have a dog like that? I guess I look at it from the standpoint, if I drilled you in the face, I'd get the book thrown at me, assault charges, can't cross the border, criminal record, sued, you name it, but a dog attacks and bites you, what will really happen? Could careless if the dog get's put down, if I have 50 stitches somewhere it's too late, the guy gets a $250 fine, and I'm scarred up. I don't want to argue about this with you, but I just feel the law is too lenient towards dangerous pets is all. My sister has lived in hell because of the scarring, changed her life for ever. Nothing ever happened to the owner.

That's horrible whay happened to your sister and I can understand why you might react the way you did as long as you realize that you are coming from an emotional standpoint and not a factual one. Without all the facts advocating a personal suit seems ridiculous to me.

This is an interesting topic and all the advise has been given. If my dog ever bites someone I will put him down and just like a good old fashioned execution style setting where those who have been harmed gather to watch, it would be in the same fashion. A dog owner can only teach a dog so much and what it decides to do after that fact is uncontrollable to some extent. I’m sure no one wants to see a dog brutally murdered in a public setting and a good reminder to me and everyone else to keep your dog at bay if you have doubts, especially when it enters a path I walk on 😁

I lose it, I snap. I head fake him with the bark caller and the idiot goes for it. Uppercut, left hook and a Milk Bone to the donut hole. He's lying there in his own pile of Dog Chow. How's that for "Tough Guy". Ever since, I've been the champ.

I have an aggressive/protective dog,(collie/ lab cross) I live on a farm. I have signs up "guard dog on duty" People that know me know my dog and respect him. If you come to my place and get out of your truck before I call him back, you might get bit. I would not put down my dog for that. I would consider putting down the idiot that got out of his truck though. Can't always blame the dog, people are not smart. Also he gets muzzled if he goes off my place, if he needs to be around people.

That's how it's done there....thank god the "Champ" resolved it!
Miss that radio skit...
Now back on track, dog gets quarantined to ensure of no issues and I bet the owner will be fined and the bill too for the nights the dog spent in jail.
Owners responsibility.

If the dog is a repeat offender, or if the injury is more serious, I would consider suing, but would offer to drop the suit if the dog is destroyed. If the injury is severe, I would definitely consider suing. If I had to undergo treatment for rabies because the owner never bothered to vaccinate the dog, I would sue.
