Spruce Grove Range
I'm surprised I'm not seeing any chatter on here about the situation at Spruce Grove and the NIMBY's who bought a house close to a gun range.
Looks like the city is amending the bylaw now and will exclude gun ranges from the land use bylaw and that will put Spruce Grove out of business.
Anyone else know anything about this intrusion into our sport?

I thought the closure a couple of years ago did pretty much, end the prospects for the SGGC?

They fought it in court and won, but now the city is coming at them from what I have gathered.
Edit: it's Parkland County that's coming after them

Correct me if I am wrong. The court action that was "won" was a lawsuit launched by a neighbor (DeGeer) claiming damages against the club. That action was "set down" (discontinued).
The Range was "shut down" after it failed on appeal, to obtain a Development Permit. (That had nothing to do with the DeGeer action). The Club appealed to the Provincial court, asking that the County be required to reconsider...but lost that case in court. To re-open, the club would need to resubmit another application for a Development Permit... which, given the history...would have a very limited chance of success.
If a change is made to the land use bylaw, specifically ruling out the establishment of a shooting range as a discretionary use ... then the aforementioned application would have "0 chance for success" as opposed to having "a very limited chance of succcess".
Also, I would assume that if an amendment prohibiting shooting ranges as a discretionary use came into effect, it would not impact on any existing range, but rather, would make it impossible to apply for a new Range within the jurisdiction.

The pitch passed without debate at council's community services meeting. But that's because the need is obvious, said Coun. Moe Banga, a former police detective.

Here's hoping the EPS range proposal becomes reality, but as I understand the situation, this is not the first time the proposal has been endorsed at the "preliminary"/Community Services Committee" level. And that previous projects have never survived the "budget debate" process at City Council level (which of course is the one that matters and will take place later this fall). Hope my understanding is wrong.
With regard to SGGC ...anybody have an update on that situation?

Funny how adding a comment when posting a link makes your point so much more clear.

Googled up a news report....
First, council voted 5 - 2 in favor of including the prohibition of shooting ranges on Country Residential (type) zoned land in the proposed amendment to the Land Use Bylaw. I think the third reading of the amendment will be held this fall.
Second, SGGC initiated a Statement of Claim (prelude to defamation lawsuit) against the Mayor...related to a comment made about the type of firearm used to fire the bullet found in the DeGeer house ...and how that firearm would have been restricted to use on a Range....which implied the bullet came from the Range. I won't try to explain the rationale behind the suit --- if interested, just Google it up.
My takeaway from these latest exchanges ... That if the 3rd reading of the proposed LAND Use amendment passes in the fall --- the land on which SGGC sits...cannot be developed as a shooting range.
I am a bit perplexed regarding the potential defamation suit against the mayor as it seems it would have no effect on the Range Operation?

well he did say that the bullet came from a semi automatic (how would he know?) and that semi automatics can only be used on ranges (totally false) so therefore, the bullet came from the range.
the ignorance is astounding and i hope he not only is guilty of defamation, but he is voted out this year as well.
