Camp wainright hunt
Hey,
I got drawn for the wainright deer hunt, and was looking for any information about what kind of hunt this is. Is it mostly driving, walking etc? Main reason I'm wondering is in deciding weather I should bring my 5 yo son along with me
Thanks

The Camp Wx hunt is what you want out of a hunt. You will have over 300+Km2 of hunt able land. To some hunters it will be walk-in only, some of it will turn into the great AB truck hunt and some is a bit of both. There are lots of trails and half the base is do what you want, part of the base is limited driving (walk-in only but Veh to recover) and some is purely walk. Bring the boy as 3 days with him is time well spent no matter how you hunt.

Like previous poster said, you can do both. Problem is if you've never been before, how to pick which to do and when/where?? my advice (albeit from only 1 trip there) is drive as fast as legally allowed ( )to the furthest corner of the base that's open for your drawn season (yes you'll see deer/moose in the dark but just ignore 'em cuz you cant shoot 'em yet anyways!). once you're there, you should be away from the main mob, and will have time to set up and do what your gut tells you.

Been there 3 times for moose and will be there for deer this year. If the weather holds up you shouldn't have an issue bring your son. You can walk or drive which ever works. I had my son who was 8 at the time on my last moose hunt there. Only time we any issues was it was a blizzard and had a 300 yard recovery. He tried to help but ended up warming up in the truck and watchng the work.

Sorry to hijack but didn't want to start another Camp Wainwright thread.
The Dec 12-14 hunt will be my first time at the base.
Maybe a silly question but, with the CWD head submission, if you shoot a decent buck, can you keep the antlers or skull cap?

Talk to other guys the first morning especially. Swap phone numbers with as many as you can...lots of guys are willing to help each other out. I've been in there nearly a dozen times now and never had a shortage of contacts. I know that's my plan next week.

I took two of my sons last year. They were aged seven and eight. We had a blast. I hunt a little bit too hard so to lighten it up I bought them crazy carpets. Everywhere you go there is a good toboggan hill. They talk about it still. We even managed to get a decent buck. Also get the hotel room with the waterslide... obviously. 😀

I thought you were only allowed to bring one guest? I've never been there by the way, this will be the first year.

yes you can bring as many people as you can fit in your vehicle but they cant help you push bush.
I had to reach the right extension at the base to confirm this today as i wanted to bring my son and a friend.

What have the conditions been like? Any snow? Any big deer taken yet? Is a lot of the area closed because of military training?

C1,C2 and C3 were closed today, best mule I seen get checked in was maybe 145", heard there was a 53" moose shot and I know there is a much better bull then him still alive (till tomorrow) we seen 12 bulls and probably 20 cows and calfs today, but only seen 4 deer all day.. but we weren't really in the best deer area.
Plus very little snow here..

I was there this morning. Saw a bunch of deer, 3 bull elk, 1 cow moose and 1 bull moose, which I shot. I would go again for deer, but not moose.

That doesn't sound like a lot of deer. Is that pretty average for day 1?

Have 2 bull moose tags and haven't seen one in an open area. Really hoping to find some tomorrow. Super tough walking up on anything with the snow conditions. We have seen a few small mule bucks and 1 mediocre wt buck, 8or9 elk and a couple cow moose.
