Default Looking for coyote hunting advice

Looking for recommendations on calling/decoying coyotes into 30 yards to kill with a bow from a blind (double bull). Any favorite coyote hunting tricks would be helpful also.

I have taken down a coyote years ago that I called into my turkey decoy spread using a turkey box call but that was a while ago. I was asked this past week by my chiropractor if I could thin some out from her property.

Problem is she only has 3 acres, people on both sides or her have about 5 acre lots, but behind the chiropractors property is a diary farm of about 300 acres.

Bow hunting on her 3 acre lot seems doable but was thinking if I could get permission from the dairy farmer to hunt them on his land, my chances of taking a few yotes would be much better.

Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated.

We used to have a 45.00 bounty on coyotes years ago, I need to check to see if that’s still available this year.

Talk to the neighbors and see if many people have dogs that wander off their property. If they don't, snaring them may be a better option.

Where are you?

I call coyotes, but the only time I've killed any from a blind was when I was hunting ducks and a coyote would come into shotgun range snooping around.

I do use a ghillie suit and have coyotes come within arm's length.

With calling you don't need permission on a lot of ground, cause the coyotes come to you. You can call them from 2 miles away.

You may want a caller with you so you can concentrate on using the bow.

I use hand calls but a lot of guys use Ecallers. The ecaaller gets the focus off the hunter. A battery operated decoy may also help you get the focus off you.

If you talk with the dairy farmer he may have an area that dead cows get dumped and if thats the case there will be trails being used by coyotes to regularly go back and forth from cover to the dead pile. You may be able to setup on one of those trails and get a shot.

tikka250 thanks I should have thought of that I grew up on diary farm.

Bergerboy the location is on the outskirts of a town called Russburg (small town)
I don't think snares or rifles would be out of the question but better off not.

Redfrog any idea if a squealing rabbit or a bleating fawn would be better than
using a turkey call ?

Two of the things my chiropractor said that stuck in my mind where..

1 "Every time without fail day or night when the fire alarm sounds from the
fire house they all start howling. At least 4 or 5 in a group near by others start in from farther away."

2 "One of the groups has a weird creepy, don't know how to explain it ..
screaming type thing ? I don't know just sounds really different than the rest."

I did not ask yet if there are so many that they are starting to eat the cats
and little dogs. My next appointment is next Mon. will have to ask more questions.

What do you all think of what she said ?

Any distress call sound should work. An open reed hand call allows you a wide range of coyote vocals as well as a wide range of distress sounds. I'd likely try a howl or two and then go to pup distress sounds. Lots of YOY running with mom and dad to learn the skills of hunting. sounds like a built up area. I'd try first and last light.

If the siren goes off and they start howlin' is that a really good time to
try to call or just a waste of time ?

Other people on my hunt club say they can hear the same thing on both
sides of the river behind my house (1 KM to the river) they say all you have
to do is crack a large tree branch or let go a round from the shotgun.

But they never said anything about trying to call them in when howling begins.

Unless they are volunteer firefighters, they won't show up at the firehall.

They are just responding to the howl of the siren. some guys go out in the night and use a siren to locate coyotes then come back the next morning to call them.

I think most people overthink this coyote killing. There's a ton of things to be aware of, but if they were as smart as some think they are they would never get shot.

I can howl at my place after dark or at dusk and get a vocal response from a dozen or more coyotes from 4 different directions and not have one come in.

Depending on which month I can get those same coyotes to come in on the run to beat me up and take my lunch money with the same howler.

Get someone who can call to go with you. they call you shoot them with the pointy stick. rinse and repeat.

Rodger that Redfrog.

I figured the howling at the siren would be a good way to locating groups
at the time.

And yea this is gonna sound crazy but like you my wife has called back and
forth to Whipporwills and got them closer to our house in the evening.

And like you say it is true sometimes you can get them to come near but
the damn things just shy on the reach of your shotgun.

Like birds so they come and go like grouse, ducks and deer.

So what are my best options to knock down at least 2 or 3 of these guys ?
Should I try to kill the one with the weird howl first (leader of the pack) or
just concentrate on food supply ?

Until I get more info. I'm thinking 2 or 3 may be enough to change things
don't know yet just how infested they are.

So Redfrog says my best chances are with a caller from a differnt point
quarter the wind so to speak.

Got to think about that.

Thanks Redfrog.

Sometimes you have to sit back and think about things.

The weird howl may be a youngster. Coyotes have a wide range of vocals.

Without seeing the place, as has been suggested I'd check to see if the dairy farm has a dead pile. set up on the trails in or out. watch the wind and the keep the sun on your back if possible.

I've called around feedlots where there were dead piles. tough calling, but lots of coyotes. We could see 20 + coming and going from one spot. And buddy do they stink.

I like to call rather than ambush, so I'd set up watching the wind and the sun in the afternoon or morning. one caller one shooter. If more than one comes in I try to kill the furthest one first and go to a pup distress and keep calling. The others will often come back. calling them in is only half of the job, killing them is the other half.

Thanks Redfrog that right there is the kind of info. I was asking for.
If you happen to shoot a turkey out of a group of say 3 to 5 when you
down one the others come up to it and peck and kick it like WHAT !
that makes the others (distacted) like shooting ducks out of a barrel.

Sounds like same with yotes.

Is one of the things I wanted to know.
Thank you.

If you see 20+ in a group hell yea man you got a problem.
