Default First River Fish on a Fly Rod

I took everyone's advice on here and did some research, looked at maps and went exploring.

Found my "spot" had a look at was going on. I saw a riser after a while and tried to match what I saw with a nice dry fly and ... ... ... got a hit ... ... ... I saw the beast break the water & take my fly, hook set and the fight was on. Even got her onto my reel and heard the drag scream.

All I can say is what a rush. And it felt more than fun ... it felt earned.

I caught two beautiful Cutthroats, not huge but the nicest fish ever on my fly rod and even though it was a relatively short outing it was a great day.

Still lost a number of flies and one fish but least today it felt worth it.

Will try and post pics later.

Nice one! And this is a decent cutthroat too.
Nothing like that feeling of spoting the rise, figuring out what it could be eating, then making the good cast in the right place and getting a bite! It does feel like it all pays off.
Welcome to the addiction!

The best part of river/stream fishing is the relative ease of catch- compared to lake fishing. Many years of experience has made the lake waters so humbling as to the specificity of a fly they will hit. A crumbled leaf tossed into the current will get trout to rise. Gratz on the cutthroat- you will find any size of grayling will give you lots of action also.

Way to take the wind out of my sails.

No graylings in the rivers down here, but I have caught some in a couple stocked ponds around here. This guy was more fun.

Seems like you had a great time! You'll be hooked on river fishing for life! I find fly fishing easier when it comes to fishing rivers.....

Thanks for the photo. There is so much more to fishing than just fishing. Keep up the exploring-the reward of another bend and finding a great pool is why I enjoy creek/river fishing.

Lol Sounds like you are quite the professional!! I would have to disagree 100% on this comment. I've tried the crumbled leaf fly and never had one hit, not one!!!
Lets see some of your River fly fishing pics!!

Congratts Millsboy on you success!!!!

Good morning Dave. I am not a professional-and did not elude to it either. Just old, and spent lots of time outdoors. I do appreciate your opinion as well as many of the other people on the site. Very informative on almost any topic.
