Default What ate the bunny?

I found this in my back yard last night:

Not sure what would have caused it. The yard is fenced in but there is enough space (8" or so) under some spots for some animals to get in... There was a bunch of fur around so I'm thinking it was killed in the yard... Didn't see the rest of the body anywhere though.

Any idea what killed it? Coyote?

A predatory bird of some form I'm guessing. I don't think a coyote could nibble that cleanly.

Yeah, I thought it was too clean for a coyote... but I'm close to Nose Hill in Calgary (Edgemont) so I thought it could be a possibility. Interesting about a large bird though... I have some friends who's dog was attacked by an owl in the city.

Default Bunny

Coyote, fox etc would have hauled it away and would not have left parts behind, looks like a Raptor of some sortor a smaller predator.

Great horned owl would be my guess.
I live across from a playground that jack rabbits use regularly. Was out before dawn and saw an owl perched on the fence watching the playground. They fly among us, while we sleep.

I know one of the birds imitated attack on my 35 lbs spaniel in my backyard on the age of Calgary, not sure if he saw me at last second or realized the size of my pooch, but he broke it off. Not sure what these birds are, but we always have 2 or 3 over our heads looking for rodents, I guess, and they are quite big, rabbit is just about the right size for them, I, actually worry about my cat sometimes

Default Bobcat

I live in Calgary near glenmore reservoir and last year had a bobcat eating every rabbit in sight. My niebor got a video of it killing a squirl in a spruce tree. This year no sightings yet but I have seen a ton of missing cat posters around and rabbit numbers are low. Called fish and wildlife and told them about it they said they had a ton of calls and to stay away from the kittens and mom. The Bob cat can jump,a six foot fence like its not even there.

That would be my guess as well. Great Horned Owl's are tremendous hunters and will kill anything they can overtake, often much larger prey than other Raptor's. If this happened at night, really not doubt. GHO's also breed and fledge way earlier than other Raptor's so this likely provided good eats for some youngsters.

Red Tail's and Swainson's are Diurnal so do not hunt at night. They likely wouldn't make a kill and consume in your yard either.

Great Horned Owl = BINGO!
Ate all it could, hauled the remains back to nest to feed it's young.
