That's an elk scraping the bark with its bottom incisors.

Looks more like bear markings to me .. The rest of the tree and others around will let you know for sure though

Theres 5 trees in this line all scraped the same . Now i figured if it were a bear the bark would of been peeled downward not going upward

Thanks TM .. I'm going to pay more attention in my elk spots ... I just assumed there was an infestation of bears..elk could be the culprit ..

Yes, but when you go to an area where there are multiple trees like this and all of them are 3-6 feet off the ground you can be certain it is from ungulates. Most porkys I've seen have been higher and they really love willow trees.

This is not the markings of a buck rather that of a cougar!

The local watering holes here have many similar markings.

Likely elk but looks like a porky too. I know porkies like to get high up chewing on end shoots but in winter they often chew right at snow depth so often trees are girded low to ground

If the scrapes go upwards, elk or moose...downwards could be beaver
