Doesnt always work that way. A strong invasive species can choke out/displace the pike and trout as well as other species. There will be competition for food, as well as egg predation and I would bet they will feed on the young of the predators as well.
A water body can only support so much biomass. If the carp become even 30% of that biomass they have displaced 30% of the other species. Kind of easy way to put it but I think helps see the impact. Just used 30% as an example(probably will be much higher).
|
Fair enough.
I do not know enough about the Carp Species to really hazzard an accurate guess.
I do not know what their main diet is and if they would be competing for the same food as the pike and walleyes. I am certain the carp minnors will be a nice treat for other species of fish.
I speculate there will be some larger pike and walleye as there will be more food.
I am curious as to what the survival rate of the Carp Eggs are.
Right now all I can do is speculate while preparing my smoker and cast iron skillet for some Carp!

I've already noticed this in Blood Indian. The trout this winter were much larger. What do you think I found when I opened their stomachs? You guessed it.

Prussian carp has never displaced or stunted any predator species. If it were so, all of southern/central Alberta reservoirs would be full of them. These carp did not show up yesterday, some of the earliest catches are from 95/96 caught NE of Strathmore in farm dugouts and irrigation ponds.
These ponds are fine examples that Prussian carp is not as dangerous to Alberta waters as everybody wants to think. It is populated by perch, Prussian carp, lake whitefish, tulibee, suckers and pike (some very large pike for given size of waterbody). All these fish have different age classes within species. Yes perch and carp seem to be in biggest number, after them would be tulibee and then whitefish and last pike.
Lower number of pike is due to greedy fisherman keeping every one they can catch, same goes for whitefish.
So my point is after 20 years of their known existence in a fairly small body of water(about 6 meters deep and size of a football field) they have not been able to overtake the ecosystem, nor did perch. I've never witnessed a winterkill at this location so oxygen levels must be fine.
These are facts based on observation and communication with local fisherman that hang out there. Something that very few of you if any can claim. That is why I don't believe in Internet studies and bs videos. First hand experience tells me a different story.

You are free to believe what you want.
but,
Just their very existence creates the displacement. Pretty hard not to see that.
edit: That said damage is done and irreparable. In 20 years they will be common and by then accepted(maybe sooner).

How about you all carpphobes share the lakes info where they are present so we carpfans can go there and catch them. Win win situation for everybody. My smoker can fit 20 or so of those 1 pounders. Wouldn't mind firing it up and inviting some of you to try it with beer up instead of catching and releasing 20-30 walleye in CV.
Jeprli, do you want to go to that pond by Irricana during weekend?

Extra biomass = displacement.

Not a biologist, just a fisherman.
Again, Alberta fisheries are all about introduced species. You can't mistake that, unless you're blind. Displacement of native species has been going on for past 100 years in this province.
Bring on the tiger trout if natural fish is not good enough let's mess with mother nature and cultivate Franken fish.
Triploid trout, talk about displacement.
a person could go on and on about introduced species and damage they've done in most of province, but who gives a doodle when we got algae blooming, fertilizer accumulating ponds full of problem fish.

Would be nice to see 2000 people on the banks need to hammer them hard and now!. If ESRD did something to prosecute then there the problem not you but don't see that happening good call on your part.

Carp are hard to catch from my xp. Mostly feed on grass/natural feeds. Would love to catch some on the fly. Fun fish from what I've read. Can't see them taking over a system...unless the system is lacking to begin with.

These carp don't really like boilies. Worms, maggots, bread squeezed into flakes, meal worms, scuds that's what gets them most of time.
Bigger fish will even take tiny spoons on a slow retrieve, but bait is the way to go and much more relaxing.
