Beaver trim

I had a pile of beaver trim sitting on the floor after a beaver and thought I would try to see if I could make some marten attractant. I figured if I bottled it all year and rotted it down that it might have a decent odor especially in cold weather. I may even try some dirt hole sets for coyotes at home here. Has anyone tried this sort of thing? I know guys use fish oil and I bet after the summer is over I would have beaver oil and I would just smear it around the marten boxes. What kind of stuff do you guys do for making scents this time of year?

I also got some Lynx Livers in bottles already as well for next years lynx sets

You could try decomposing the trim like fish oil. Might take longer than fish. Probably more than a year. If you do this, try adding a couple drops of anise seed oil to the process. You could try adding the castor or oil glands too. If the scent doesn't work for marten it should work a few other critters. Only use the oil that rises to the top.

i like making lure. its rewarding catching a critter on a concoction you've come up with yourself. the stuff is expensive, and i've got a bad habit using way to much.

had good success making marten lure. they're easy to fool.

beavers and skunks are gold for making lure.

been keeping all the muskrat glands from the last few weeks. and they'll come in handi when spring really arrives.

really into the k9's right now and have been keeping all the glands/pads/etc from females, that i can.when i have the time. its nasty!!!

going to mix some stuff up this summer.

really need to find a way to collect pure coyote urine. haven't figured that out yet. doesn't seem to be alot left in the bladder after they die.the ones i've looked at anyway.

yes, i've used dog urine(yellow snow) but its just not the same. and i can't get my dogs to pee in a bottle.its a mystery to me,how they collect coyote urine in big quantities.

Thanks Brag. I am interested in what you got figured out for Marten. Have you tried a syringe for Coyote Urine? Take it out like you would skunk. You might have better luck than trying to dig around for a bladder and it would be a lot nicer to get that way if it works. Get a real good thick needle from a taxidermy supply store and it might work

yes, i've recovered some with a syringe. but not very much.

the marten lure i like, probably wouldn't be great where your trapping. i'm trapping(trapped) marten on the west coast, very wet and rainy, never super cold. so you need a pasty lure that won't wash away with all the rain/wet snow.

your looking for something that will still smell in -15 to -40 cold. different conditions/different base. seems marten like skunky smells and sweet smells. try to come up with a sweet/skunky smell that still puts out when its cold.

Used in Cat, Beaver, and Muskrat lures.

Valerian Oil Extract

Sodium Benzoate Powder:
(Bait Makers Compound) for use in preventing cut of ground flesh baits from decomposing after reaching the desired stage of taint. In addition, it is used in quieting down raw glands and secretions during the aging process and also for preserving urine, liquid bait, fish oil, solid fish baits, etc. Recommended proportions are seven or eight tablespoons of power to a gallon of liquid , paste or solid materials and mixed well.

Zinc Valerate Powder:
Special powder used by lure and flesh bait makers in the same manner as sodium benzoate but its chief function is to stimulate lure and bait odors during the aging process and to stabilize them when in use. So great is the concentration of this product that a half-teaspoon is sufficient to a gallon of urine or bait materials.

Anhydrous Lanolin:
(US Pure) (Sheep's Wool Grease) Recommended as a base for use in production of paste-type animal attractors.
