Substituting powders
I have a question for you more experienced reloaders.
Lately I have been looking at burn rate charts.
Viht N550 is almost identical to RL19. I have a lb of N550 but am having a hard time finding load data for it. Could you safely substitute N550 for RL19 and work up a load based on the same loads pudlished for RL19?
Obviously start low and work your way up.
Any help would be appreciated

Personally I wouldn't try that I only used published data often from several sources
What cartridge are you trying to load for maybe somebody has some data they could share

Safe way
I would not recommend working up a cartridge/powder combination without a reference. The answer is the QuickLoad programme. It will let you work up damn near any powder in any of hundreds of cartridges. Of course, t he standard advice about starting moderate and slowly increasing always applies, but at least this tool gets you stated and gives a goo0d estimate of chamber pressures with a given load.

I wouldnt but I am an old reloader from the 70's
Just like there are old pilots but no old and bold pilots I would not consider a substitute based on burn rate unless I had published data for the calibre as a starting point. If there is no published data for that powder for the application you are wanting there is probably a valid reason there is no data.

Thanks for the Lapua reloading guide I have never seen that before.
Ive just looked at hornady, Barnes and Nosler
Does anyone have any experience with Viht powders? What have your experiences been? Prophet River has a good supply in stock so it may be a good alternative to H, IMR and Alliant

I have used n-133 in my 223 rifles, and n-550 and n-560 in my 260rem. They work just fine, as long as you find the correct bullet/powder combination.

I see the Vihtavouri data, the Lapua and the Grurifrasca info, shows N160, 165, 560, but nothing on the N550. There is no data in the Deva Weiderladen , either (German proof house). It would likely work for the 7mag, it appears to more more in the area of the slowest of the 4350, fastest of the 4831 range powders, but the 7mag generally works better with the slower stuff, from H4831 and slower. But, there are better powders, that have been tested.
Essentially, don`t bother with it in the 7Rem Mag.
If you look at the ADI chart vs the IMR chart, vs the VV chart you can see where it can mislead a person a bit using the burn rate charts, and all three of them supply Hodgdon and Western, AA powders.
Burn rate charts are useful for buying similar powders, but, check the data sources first, before buying.

Love the VIT powders. Very easy droppers. Very consistent.
Cost a fair penny, but lot to lot consistency is better than most other mfgrs

viht powders
Been using N135 and N140 in my 9.3x62 Blaser for a few years. Very consistent and nice to work with.

I use the educated guess technique for loading all the time where there is no data and it is a usable technique if you take reasonable care. The key word is "educated". If you are unsure or lack the knowledge, look for data to work from. Leeper

It is often said that 'a man with two watches never knows what time it is'.
Similarly no two reloading manuals have identical data and data from older editions can be a lot different than current editions. Bullet, powder and primer specifications are not fixed and do evolve. When we compare different manuals we are really making educated judgements based on the information we have. These are just start points as our firearms should tell us what they like, if we are observant enough to listen.
Good Luck, YMMV

Thank You!
Yes, meters well in a progressive powder dropper (the acid test of powder flow)
As well as a uniflow, and a trickler.
Yes, I should have said meters well :sHa_shakeshou t:

I've only used N150 in my 7x57, I've taking a liking to Varget (shocking, I know) just because it performs nicely over varying temperatures. I continually try many powders and see no reason not to experiment with some descent research. What is it you are shooting, out of what, and at what? Do you have an existing load worked up - can predict muzzle pressure to isolate a charge of N550 that can produce similar pressures. Obviously the burn rate makes a whole world of difference but QuickLoad can help with that. I can run a quick simulation if you drop some more info.

I've done it lots of times
have a life time supply of 8700 powder, that I bought before I knew anything about powder or reloading. It is very fine and slow.
The book I had from accurate said it would be good in magnum cases (I don't shoot a mag) but I have tried it in almost everything else.
It worked the best in my .410 shotgun, with brass cases.
BTW I have NEVER used a hotter powder than was mentioned in the books!

In this case, N550 in the 7mag, it may be that it was tested, and didn't perform well, so it was not published. Or, it could be they had enough good data, they didn't waste loot testing every powder available for it. You may well be able to use Quickload, to come up with a load that can be used, but, if you only have a pound, it probably isn't worth doing anyway.
Different scenario with a cartridge that is hard to find data for, or it isn't published. Then, something like Quickload is a great tool. But, I would still contact powder and bullet mfgrs to see what they will or can tell me.
Where there is a will or a need , there is a way, but, have to be careful and diligent in trying all avenues to get info from, before proceeding with the loading process.
Have seen people at the range with strings attached to triggers and the gun held down with sandbags. Not particularly interested in doing things that way for myself. Interesting to watch though.
