Well presistance pays off. Out of three rat hole sets there are 2 rats. Still nothing on the carrots. That is 4 out of that ditch should be about done for rats there. I'll see tomorrow.
Happy trapping.

Great pictures, Peter! It must be nice to do your trapping with a buddy to keep you company. You're catching some some nice, big rats as well. It looks like fun!

I'm making colony and submarine traps for people. I'm just north of Edmonton in Morinville. Next weekend there's a guy coming from Vegreville that could get them that far. PM me if you are interested.
BTW, welcome to the forum.

Good job, Shakeyleg. I caught a handful that were a little lighter than the rest but I don't remember catching one that light.
I think that I goofed by pulling my float sets out this week after they got frozen in. Earlier in October I rarely saw any rats swimming around and now they are everywhere, all day long! It's part of the learning curve I guess.

Still picking up a few rats. A little slower now that i've been working on coyotes too. It would be nice to pick up another 40-50 by the time things freeze solid.
count is 155 for the season so far.

nice dog pcp. my dogs have become ace rat run finders. begun only setting the ones they get "ratty" on. and skipping the others.
12"-14" of heavy wet snow put all the coyote gear out of action. rats saved the day. nice being able to do both.
snow probably will be gone tonight.

I was out gaining hunting permission on Friday and I came across a few rats and a yote.
One shallow slough there were 5 rats in I plinked 2 then the other one came over and gotter then another and another. The slough was only ankle deep in the middle. Weird so many rats take up residence in such a shallow slough. Also seen a big white weasel. Season had not started yet one day. Shucks

It looks like you're having fun and getting a few critters, Bill. I might have to do a little rat shooting as well. There are enough of them swimming around all day right now.

I tell ya Dave its a blast. Pun intended. Its hunting season so I am still carrying the .22 for fall rats and then the .223 for yotes and my deer rifle. If I get pulled over the cops are gonna question me to see if I am terrorist. But I tell all the ladies I need one for every application. Just like women with shoes or a purse.
But my trapping is not gonna get alot of attention this November due to my deer tag count. But I will keep posting pics.

Don't forget the .22Win Mag for beaver....lol! My truck is in for repairs so I have to take out the quad and I wasn't sure of what rifle to bring. I watched 10 deer in the field yesterday so I'm thinking 30.06 to get that taken care of. The muskrats are safe today but if I see a coyote in my travels I might have a bit of sewing to do.

I'm glad to see someone still trapping muskrats, Shakey! Those are some nice looking rats. It's iced over around here but not thick enough to walk on. By the time that I get all of my coyote snares out it should be though. I'm hoping to set traps in huts sometime this season and get more pictures on the thread.

Hey guys, some awesome pictures on here, you guys are really hammering the rats!
A quick question: What is the best method for anchoring Colony traps? I've heard of using Rebar as weight to hold it down, but I was wondering if anyone uses any kind of stakes, and if so what kind, thanks!

so stayed home and let another dummy have a crack at them.
really enjoying these rats, trapping and snaring coyotes. looking forward to getting the weasel/mink gear out.
amazing beautiful day in southern ab today. epic!.

First season back trapping in the last 25 years! Thanks to HunterDave for the colony traps, they work great. If you guys notice anything on the hides that I can improve on please let me know.

Right on, MB, looking good!
The only thing that I'd suggest is to pull the sides of the pelt on the wire down and put a clothes peg. That ought to give you 3/4" to 1" more in length. Have a look through this thread and I think that you'll find a picture of what I'm trying to describe.
EDIT* See post #53.
Well done and thanks for mentioning my colony traps.
