Default 338 lapua AI loads

Hi guys , im looking for some loads for the 338 lapua AI . I looked in a couple reloading books and can't find anything for the 338 AI. Does anyone know or have a book with the 338 AI in it.
Thanks

AI gives you around 5% more case capacity, start at mid range loads for the 338 and work up. Don't think I've ever seen any AI loads in a book other than PO Ackley's books.

Talk with Rick Timmins at Alberta Tactical Rifles for best loads. I have one of his customized rifles in 338 AI. I launch the 300 smk at 3000 fps with great accuracy. They have a website.

Just be cautious, and work up carefully, we still have parts of a 338Lapua Improved rifle, laying around on our range.

If that's built on a Savage I'd wear a helmet when shooting it!

Are the Savage actions not as strong as other brands?

Barrels are only 1" in diameter with a standard shank and still no even close to thick enough with the large shank. It may work if you were to get rid of the barrel nut but still not recommended.

Is there any science suggesting that the barrels are not strong enough and a large shank is required? Is it a function of the extra material removal to re-chamber to AI the issue as the chamber gets too thin? If you got rid of he barrel nut, how would that improve the strength?

Most production rifle barrels measure 1.250" diameter over chamber area. The Savage barrel nut reduces their barrel to 1.000" diameter. Getting into the bigger magnums barrel steel is less than .250" thick surrounding chamber. Think that's enough steel?

I would think that the engineering department and the R&D people have figured that out .

I'm sure the factory engineers have run numbers and calculations that are close to lawyer proof, but have the firms supplying chambered replacement barrels done the same? If I fell on real hard times and found it necessary to re-barrel a Savage I would pitch the lock nut and install a Remington style lug, improving appearance and bumping up safety factor.

Maybe one should ask the barrel manufacturers

The only way to know is to do the math on it.

Quit your savage hating ya grouchy old trouble maker! Not everyone has your kind of $$$

Had to get the poke in there Dale

95gr retumbo/fed 215/300gr hybrid .125 off lands is my guns fave load.

109gr us869/fed215/300gr hybrid .125 off is it's second fave.

If I start trying to crowd the lands - pressures spike all over hell at low charge level, crappy velocity and pee poor accuracy.

Mine is on a savage. Tenon on savage small shank has same OD as Remington - and large shank savages (all factory savage 338 lapua are on large shank actions) have larger barrel tenon OD than remington (which for some reason everyone seems to think is soooo bloody much stronger). When calculating strength anything threaded over the barrel (such as the action which even the large shank sav is only a whopping 1.3") is counted towards the strength of the chamber - meaning the nut would count. That said - I ditched the nut at the urging of my OCD gunsmith. Savage small shank and remington can use the same recoil lug. Savage large shank runs a larger ID lug.

I'll give Savage this: Their bolts will handle a longer snipe!

I will revisit the project with a short fast twist barrel, some day. Got a spare Savage? Still a mystery why one failed and the other was okay. Maybe someone on this forum can tell me why a 30" 1:8 6.5 WSM failed to shoot 165 gr bullets without extreme pressure.
