Savage Axis?????
Hey everyone. So i was gifted with a lee Enfield from my father and just too many things are going on it that i am looking for a new rifle. I am on a budget ( very small budget as my daughters health is not doing great)
I can get a savage axis for 309.00. Is this a decent rifle? Looking to hunt deer. Your guys thoughts would be appreciated.

New? The new ones come with the accutrigger (I believe). The stocks aren't great but all in all they are accurate and reliable. It's a good inexpensive no frills rifle.
There are those that don't like savages. I think they're just fine. Keep it clean and it won't let you down.

Not a great rifle. Stock isn't great, trigger is great. Look at different Savages like the 11 fcns

Have gun
Got a .243 and drops deer like any other rifle. Get good rings with your scope and it will help. Only draw back is at 300 yrds your groupings start to widen. 400 and probably best to keep your ammo.
Great inexpensive rifle. Actually use it for yotes more so.

I have three
I put new triggers on them, so if I had to do over I'd get the accu triggers.
They shoot great, and the glass on a couple of them costs more than the rifle.

Axis
Buy it . Gets you out for now and you can always upgrade it. The new one has a acutrigger now I believe ? I bought one 3 yrs ago in 243 in S.S. over time I put a rifle basix trigger . Tightened my groups up by more than half. Next I put better scope and rings. Lastly a Boyd's lam stock . It's honestly my fav in the safe to shoot and carry afield . But that's just my 2 cents

How does the lee enfield fit into this story?
Are you considering using it over buying an axis?
If you're debating whether to scope the enfield or buy an axis, I vote for buy the axis.
Or just use the enfield as is.

I have a axis chambered in 30-06 and it has served me very well, now sits in a Boyds laminated thumbhole stock! Still wears the packaged Bushnell scope. It is one of my favourite rifles.
I would say pick it up will serve you well then later you can upgrade when finances allow, keep it as the backup, or have a spare rifle for some one new to the sport who can't afford his own.
My 5 cents, have to round up these days

I bought one in .243 for my wife. Mainly because of how light it is and I usually end up carrying two rifles the farther we walk. I was surprised how well it shot for a cheaper unit. I put a Bushnell 3200 on it and no complaints. I even used it a couple of times last year on Coyotes. I like it.

A friend of mine used a borrowed Axis .243Win (pre Accu-trigger) to take a buck at 270yds last year, using the package scope. Rested the rifle on a fence post and the buck was down for the count.
I know a few other fellas that are on a budget and who hunt successfully with their pre Accu-trigger Axis rifles.
For the money the Axis does a very good job.

Nope. Grocery store might be better if you're on a tight budget due to your daughters health.
Many would agree that hunting isn't the best way to save money.
I know...not what the OP asked...

What you have said makes sense and agree.
But I came from a different time.
If you are going to spend to replace your choice is not bad.
If the gift works don’t spend???

The Axis I had was accurate, but the trigger and scope were terrible. The scope on the new models is probably just as bad, but the accutrigger would make me consider one again.

Having owned the axis, I would rather own a decent Lee Enfield. If I already owned a usable rifle I would just use it a few more seasons, save my pennies, and buy something else. My Axis was accurate but it was cheap and ugly and I had a hard time loving it, its a rifle you buy when you're strapped for cash but just need something to get you hunting, and its still almost a waste of money because you will probably replace it the minuet you can.
My Mauser 96 cost about the same as an axis and I'd take it over the majority of guns on the market for under a $1000.

Axis is great for the price, shoots good out of the box. The trigger sucks , stock is standard. Everything else great.
