Default Last Nafa Sale

I finally got my check today for the last sale.
What a ton of work for such little pay but I love it.
I have 84 rats still in my freezer to finish and another 120 done and ready for the Feb sale. After going through my freezer and adding it all up I am in awe at my season. Finall tally was 17 beaver , 74 coyotes, 7 fox, 3 weasel and a whopping 507 muskrats!!!

I think next year will be a fun year. I think my goals will be 500 rats, 15 beaver, 2 otter, 70 marten, 6 fisher, 4 wolves, 8 lynx, 60 coyotes and 6 fox. Not sure what my weasel goal will be because I can't catch the dang things very often lol Excited for next year guys. I am collecting stuff already for next season and it won't be too long till spring rats and beaver start up again!!

How hard can it be? Set a trap, catch the beast, process and ship, cash cheque.

Sounds like you had a good season Well done.

IMHO the market was not that bad compared to years past, except for unsold pelts, of which I have 8 decent quality marten. I don't really understand what all the great concern is about, concering this sale, other than some furs have not sold yet, because NAFA felt the price offered was not enough. This has happened in the past and most likely will happen again in the future.

In any event very few, if anybody, expected the big jump in fur prices of the 2012/13 season and now they expect it to be the norm??? For this last sale, although some furs have yet to sell, my overall pelt sale average is still basically better than in years prior to the 2012/13 season.

Overall Pelt Value
2013/14 $58.51
2012/13 79.26
2011/12 45.45
2010/11 49.58

Marten Average
2013/14 $81.55(with 8 unsold)
2012/13 159.81
2011/12 97.01
2010/11 74.10

Like you say , I think the big problem lies with the outstanding prices of last year and guys thinking that should be the norm now ..As for averages , my coyotes this year were better than last and the ones on the May sale were $22 higher than my Feb coyotes .Maybe not quite a fair comparison as I sold dogs thru FHA last year and all thru NAFA thisyear. I have no complaints at all . On the other hand , I know how much work it is to put up beaver only to have them unsold or worth little .I'm just hoping that coyotes this coming season is still good .

I am content on my prices avg $90.07/yotes. Top 152.60 and low of 37.06$. All Canadian prices it helps when the dollar has dipped.

I was super happy with the results for my first year putting up fur!! I ended up doing 19 coyotes (which seemed like a lot to me but is nothing to most of you guys!!) and got 2 foxes given to me. Got 50$ for the two fox and averaged 89$ on the 18 of my coyotes that sold with my best one going for 157$ the work was definitely worth the pay check that I ended up with!! Super excited to get out again this winter and put up some more!!

I done better on the February sale by about $20/dog but I didn't have many in that sale. Last sale I should of chucked 10 coyotes that cost more in soap than I made but averaged $98 on 54 of them an managed top price on one.
Last year everyone was complaining about too many coyotes this summer everyone's complaining about too many gophers lol. Creeks are full of beaver but I just can't get excited about a $20 beaver when I can get $10 rats

Got my cheque as well, you know you are doing it for the fun of trapping.
After last years sales I knew i was not going to be happy with $100 marten any more. And sure enough, well under $100 this last sale, which is still not bad for those that sold. Guess the unsold stuff is a head start on next years tally.

If you really think about, i'd rather catch and skin marten then rats, and i'll take $65 for the work involved rather then $12 for the rat.

And the biggest bonus is winter feels really short, always waiting for the next time to go check the line. From early fall marten trapping to late spring beaver, out on the line 6 month of the year....

And that just about says it all!

Unless you have a 250+ marten lease, or, in recent years, a long coyote line, I'm sure that any one of us could earn more with a (second) job.

I haven' done a marten line YET lol This winter will be my first but I plan on doing coyotes and rats during the week while working full time and then on days off checking my marten line. Best of both worlds. It takes me 2:45 seconds to skin a rat now and maybe 5 min to put on a board and flesh. Easy money and when you can catch 20+ in a couple hrs of checking traps it isn't too bad. Can't wait to check my marten boxes for the first time though! I got a dozen of them out the other day all set up and ready for a trap and bait. Got about 5 K of line cleared as well and found some good elk holes as well. Got to explore another 30K of lines and get another 60 boxes out before I start so I got a lot of work to do still
