Snowshoe question?
I looking to buy my wife a set of snowshoes for her birthday. I've only used the old style shoes so I'd like to get some direction on what and where to by a set for her. Thx

I like traditional shaped snowshoes and the larger the surface area, the more floatation you are going to have. Using small frame snowshoes in 48 inches of powder...........you will sink like the Titanic.

Check Costco
79 $ + tax snowshoes, bindings and poles.
3 sizes depending on weight.
I have magnessium military issue from Princess auto, those bindings are useless.
This year I've got Costco set but no time to try them yet.
Mine are rated up to 250 lbs. I am not there yet.

I hated the old military snowshoes.
the new ones are waaaay better.
Heres a hint... though...they are not titanium.... you'll find that out if you try to use men for a toaster or get em too close to a fire.

Magnesium. Are those the old ones or the new ones? I like them, though a better set of bindings is in order.
A friend ordered 3 pair from the Sportsmen's Guide for about $165 shipped.

Bingo and they burn quite well...lol
No first hand experience but enough guys saw it that word got around fast.
Those are the old ones... the new ones have a tracktion claw and IMHO work much better.
The binding did suck tho... try tying the to trap to the front of the toe opening in on the snowshoe...it helps a bit....sort of.
I still have a pair but will be getting rid of em for something better...just waiting for the right deal to come along...maybe in the spring...

Ha, ha, nice speed edit! I just put another bit of rope across the toe of the boot myself (thanks BDB), helps a bit, but it still feels like half the binding is missing.

Ojibway snowshoes
The indians in Ontario still make them. I have tried different kinds but for
me these are the best. They are 12x60". Great in open country. Easy to
learn with these.

Don't get the Costco ones....I did and they are terrible....good for exercise though as they add weight and you still sink balls deep in the snow!

One thing I can say for sure. Unless you are going on trails only, make sure they are big!!! The bigger the better. We looked at different types and then picked by weight class. I would never do that again. I am buying for the heaviest weight out there even when I am pounds and pounds away.

Looking at this, I think they should sell paw shaped ones. Or even better "foot with toes" shaped. That would freak a few people out!

I did too, and while not great, they are better then nothing and good for a backup/spare set. Well worth the $80. I'm waiting for sales in the spring on some MSR or Atlas shoes.

Check my post.
I quoted you before you managed to edit it a few minutes after I responded.
Kind of silly to claim otherwise assuming that you made a simple error in terminology.....no?

I agree they are crappy.... but still better than what passes for back country skis in the CF....lol
I'm pretty sure that more military guys might snow show recreationally if their only exposure to the darn things was not the ones issued up until a few years ago.
The new ones are much nicer and better functioning.

I have 4 sets of S shoes. The military ones now wear a set of snowboard bindings that I modified and mounted. Seem to work ok so far. Need to make some diggers up for them now.

The msr ones are on sale right now at atmosphere. Mec will price match.
I'm really happy with mine. Even in super deep snow I was still able to keep a good pace.

I'm in Edmonton and not sure what Mec stands for? Checked Costco in the park and they appear to be all sold out. I would like to buy another old style set but not sure where to look.
