While mine isnt an internal mag, its a detachable mag (99c version) I have been killing game with it for over 25 years. Its a laser beam even though it has a ringed barrel 3" from the muzzle. Two years ago i did find an amazing load for it that i cannot handload better for. The Federal Fusion 150 grainer is amazing. I took the grouse at just under 70 yards with a neck shot. They are notorious for having a heavy trigger but any smith worth his salt can polish that up.....

I've had several that would put 5 in 2" groups with iron sights. Not 308 but I've shot 99s in 300 and 250 savage. I'd expect 2" groups at 100 yards some will do better.

Default shooting the 99c

when I was 16 years old I came home from school to a long heavy cardboard box on the kitchen table.
The box said savage Arms on it.
My mom told me not to open it until dad got home from work.
that was September 29th 1979.
it was bought at the co-op on 170 st, just north of where West Edmonton Mall is now

September 29, 2013,..... I turned 50, and I shoot the same rifle today
savage model 99c lever action .308
if it were possible for a fellow to be in love with his gun,..........well .........
you get the rest of the storey

many years I bow hunted with minimal success, but after all these years of hunting, that rifle has knocked down 17 moose and well over 30 deer

WE SHOULD START A SAVAGE .308 OWNERS GROUP.............LOL

Bought a 99C a couple of years ago knowing I would be drawn for Bull Moose soon. I got a load worked up for it that I was happy with and took a nice freezer Bull last year. I'm getting just under an inch at 100 yards with a 4X scope on her. She is the nicest carring rifle that I own. Just feels good in the hands.

I know this thread has been quiet for some time but I'm all up for a Savage 99 owners group! LOL

I presently own two 99C's in .308 and just sold a 99E in .308 to my one hunting partner last October (2013).

In Oct/13 I mounted a Swarovski Z5 3,5-18x44 BT (Ballistic Turret) scope on my main 99C. The final sight-in at the range I put a 3 round group into paper at 100 yards and that you could cover with a quarter.

In November I took a really nice Whitetail buck at 500 yards with it. A clean double lung shot.

I've taken moose, elk and numerous deer with this rifle and I'm a huge fan. Most everybody I hunt with uses a Savage 99. Mostly those are .300's but they all very accurate and work great on all the aforementioned critters.

Like 1899b, I'm using Federal Fusion ammo but I'm using 165 grain. The Fusion ammo and the 99C seem to be an excellent combination.

Congrats on the deer!! 99's are so nice to carry and shoot. I am hard pressed to find a rifle that shoulders so well for me. Google 24 hour campfire and hit the Savage Collectors Forum. I'd post the link but im unsure if we are allowed to do that..

I know of a few '99 "collectors" at the Range and sooner or later see most of them working up loads with their new (old) acquisitions. For the most part, I would guess at consistent 3 shot group averages of about 1.5" if scoped. Sometimes better, sometimes not.

Mine is about the same depending on ammo and how good I am that day.

I put a couple down it at the range every fall just to ensure it is still sighted in, and then go hunting.

Last deer I took with it was a 220m shot in the back of the head.

My dads 99 in .308 went to my middle son Nathan and he got his buck this year 1 shot 1 kill ... it shot 1/2 inch dead bull's-eye
I took a few deer/elk with it too but dad has taken moose as well

he is 86 this year so he was the first person my son called right after we got the buck into the truck ..grandpa was proud and happy his gun was still harvesting animals

My boy checked it price wise and it came in about $1100

I would pay many times the original purchase price for any '99 that shoots consistent 5 shot groups in the 1/2 MOA range. Love the looks of that model, just never seen it as a bonifide "tack driver".

One must realize however that the true test of a rifle like the 99 is not at the bench but in the field.
There is has to consistently drop game at all practical hunting ranges , be stone cold reliable, and easy to shoot and carry.
The 99 is all that and a bag of fries .
Never owned one for very long mind you, except to flip it and buy a single shot!
I guess Ii should add that although I may buy a 99 in the future, it would not be my idea of a range rifle for fun,I would be hunting with it.

Default Savage 99

When I was 12 years old I bought my cousins 99c 308 for $120. I hunted everything from crows to moose over the next 13 years. The action wasn't the smoothest and the trigger was heavy, but damn that thing shot well for me. After 13 years of shooting this wonderful rifle, I had the STUPID idea that I needed something new. I sold the old Savage(dumm-ass). I regret that day. After reading "1899b"'s post, I again, after 30 more years still regret selling the Savage. When I saw "1899b" pictures, his Savage looked identical to mine. It's time for me to start looking for another Savage 99.
