Default first kill with new gun

When I graduated from Nait this past year my Dad got me my very first rifle (a .243 if you didn't guess by my user name ;p) as a graduation present (up till now I have been using my Grandpa's old gun). Also because this is the first November in a long time that I haven't been in school I decided to take the whole month off to do some hunting and christen my new gun in properly!

I came up to my Dad's from Edmonton on the 2nd of November and hunted every following day. My first solid month of hunting started off very slow, the weather was miserable, all wind and gloom, and the deer just plain weren't around! Then to compound what was already looking like a poor year I shot a deer about a week ago and sadly lost it (you can see my Dad's (gallery) post 'shot placement'). It was the first animal in ten years of hunting that has gone more than ten feet from where I shot it ... As you can imagine it was a terrible feeling and I was really shaken up about it. I searched high and low for that deer for 6 hours the day after I shot it and then a couple hours every day following for the next six days. I never did see any ravens so I am praying that he some how made it through and is still out chasing the does.

Then last night, me and my dad headed out to his secret spot (so secret in fact that he forgot all about it until that night). Has we quaded through the area we passed through an oil well clearing and I was like 'I am sitting here!'. The little clearing was at the intersection of two cutlines and it looked promising. After I had been sitting for about an hour with no action I pulled out my 'doe in a can' deer call and gave three bleats. Not half a minute later I hear crunch crunch and this big deer come around the corner of one of the cutlines. Ears foward intent on the sound he walks to 15' of me the whole time watching me. Once he realized that there was no doe where he was looking he angled out into the field and I was able to raise the gun. Right before I could shot though he noticed something was up and made to big jumps to the treeline and then made his fatal flaw and stopped to look back. I hit him broadside through both lungs and he only made it 5' into the bush before hitting the ground.

Would be nice if he had some brow tines but I think he was the perfect deer to christen my gun with!! That and he has a drop tine, first deer I have ever even seen with one!
Sorry about the quality of the bush pictures, it was low light and with my cell phone ;p
