Think of how many houndsmen in AB and BC have caught over 500 cats and never seen one. But how many in this thread have.

The one I saw is the only live cougar that I've ever seen in the wild. Yet almost everyone I personally know has seen several cougars each, but never a black one...go figure.

When I was growing up in Northern California, a black mountain lion lived in the hills above a cousin's house -- we saw it occasionally over a span of several years. Spectacular animal.

I pulled those pics from another site. Go to Big Game Houndsmen and do a black cat search and there is a days worth of reading and a lot more pics!!

Looks like somebody dyed a cougar black then mounted it. I saw a black bear turned into a Panda before with a lot of work

Those are clearly leopards (melanistic form aka "black panthers), possibly jaguars, but they look too small for that ... in the second and third pics, the "spots" are clearly visable under the black coat, which is true for all "black panthers" - leopards and jaguars, you can see the spots on the coat still with the correct light.

I respectfully disagree, the second picture is a mountain lion all the way. The tawny colour deep in the black fur, the head, and even the frosty whiskers. I would bet money on this being a mountain lion not a jaguar

Jaguar /Leopard - the color you are referring to is the "normal color of those cats and you can see the outline of the "rosettes" or spots ... for Jaguars;
"Colour morphism occurs in the species. A near-black melanistic form occurs regularly. Jaguars with melanism appear entirely black, although their spots are still visible on close examination.
The black morph is less common than the spotted form but, at about six percent of the population,[36] it is several orders of magnitude above the rate of mutation. Hence, it is being supported by selection. Some evidence indicates the melanism allele is dominant.[37] The black form may be an example of heterozygote advantage; breeding in captivity is not yet conclusive on this.
Melanistic jaguars are informally known as black panthers, but like all forms of polymorphism, they do not form a separate species.
"
For cougars ...
"Cougar coloring is plain (hence the Latin concolor) but can vary greatly between individuals and even between siblings. The coat is typically tawny, but ranges to silvery-grey or reddish, with lighter patches on the underbody, including the jaws, chin, and throat. Infants are spotted and born with blue eyes and rings on their tails;[35] juveniles are pale, and dark spots remain on their flanks.[33] Despite anecdotes to the contrary, all-black coloring (melanism) has never been documented in cougars.[44] The term "black panther" is used colloquially to refer to melanistic individuals of other species, particularly jaguars and leopards."
