Now that you mentioned it the Soilers have been very charitable the last 3 or so years having lost to the Flames 16 times and counting.

Actually the old boys club got run out of town last season, Feaster ain't going to clean up the Sutter mess overnight, I think it only fair to give the new coach and staff more than a month before we start calling for there heads.
Speaking of "old boys" club don't the Soilers have a bunch of the "old" gang hanging around coaching and presidenting and vice presidenting....you know old boys like Kevin Lowe, Mac T, Buchberger, Steve (SHOOT) Smith, lets see how that all works for ya...

I'm a flames fan mostly, but other than the beaking from Edmonton fans there have actually been some good points made here.
Iginla hasn't played worth a thing yet. Tanguay looked alright last night. Stajan and Hudler both looked good.
Our defense and top lines need changing. Not sure what can be done though.
Some pretty bad turnovers and lack of effort in our own zone. Especially the 2nd period last night. Couldn't break out if our lives depended on it.
On a side note, I don't really read too many blogs etc but I'm interested in starting.

As my grandpa said, I don't give a **** what you did yesterday, you only worth what you can do tomorrow. Tomorrow looks pretty grim for Iginla and friends.

And why not put YAK as the first shooter, he's hot and confident. I can't believe the Noodge missed the net. I guess a point is better then SFA though.

Yeah, I couldn't figure out the Edm selections. Too many coaches reward good play during the game with a slot in the shoot out. Should be for the best penalty shot shooters, period. Or at least use your tops 3 goal-scoreres to date in order of scoring: Yakupov, Gagner, Eberle. The Nuge doesn't even have a goal yet.
As for Calgary... pains me to say this as an Oiler fan but I thought they played alright last night. Their two new Czechs looked pretty darn good. I'd say they are their best players so far. The Flames created chances, but it has to be said... Kipper couldn't stop a beachball so far this year. Really uncharacteristic goals getting by him. I attribute that to a guy getting old and not bothering to play during the lock-out. Just can't do that. Timing's off. And they have nobody behind him worth putting into the game. Irving had two guys playing ahead of him in Abbotsford for goodness sake. He's not much more than a practice goalie.

I agree with you on the Czechs. But were we watching different games? Did you see the second period? I think they spent 2/3 of it in the defensive zone. Had a couple of chances based on errors by Col. At least that's what I thought.
They need a viable back up goalie. Kipper should have been better after having days off. How is he going to hold up in 3 games back to back etc. Need someone badly.

I didn't have a problem with RNH and Gagner being chosen in the shoot out, both are great one on one scorers. Yakupov has been scoring by batting the puck out of the air but I don't know how he is one on one. Gretzky was a fantastic scorer but terrible in shoot outs.

I would of started w/ Eberle, followed by Hall, and then probably Gagner...I wouldn't normally pick Hall, but I think of all the players to reward based on game play, he'd be the one.

What if Smid was the best Oiler on the ice that night? Would you let him shoot and throw away your best chance to win as a reward for his hard work? Shouldn't IMHO.

Clearly a balance of shoot out ability and recent performance has to be found. If a guy with decent but not stellar shoot out skills plays his heart out all game, are you going to put him out before or after the ringer who spent the game coasting and making dumb plays?

Fair enough. But given the frequency of shoot-outs these days, teams would do well to start finding "shoot-out ringers" and let them sit on the bench most of the time, to be used only in the shootout (OK, perhaps not THAT specialized, but infrequent playing time). Think of it like a field goal kicker. There ahve to be some guys around that are amazing at a shoot-out but don't have high regular play skills. Just a thought.

Sure. Sit him on the end of the bench, pay him league minimum, and take off the chains at shoot-out time. He's gonna be more useful than Eager or Hordichuk even if he only gets a minute of playing time a game. Thats on the assumption that he's really good at a shootout and not too much else.
The "specialist" concept has been used for decades when it comes to goons. I think these days a shooter is going to be more profitable than a fighter.

I can see your point there, but a big body 'muckin it up' in front of the net is useful every game.

You know the difference between God and Curtis Glencross???....God doesn't think he's Glencross when he steps on the ice.

I'm caught up in it so far as to say it is what hooked me into being an Oil fan. Other than that, it is just something fun to rub a flames fan's nose in.
I'm willing to bet that the Oilers win their sixth cup before the flames see #2

it's that the teams are going in opposite directions. the flames at best are stationary where they have been since the cup run. a lower middle end team that has little to offer other than a few star players surrounded by plumbers. the oilers after years of broken promises and rebuilds and frankly being terrible are finally on a upswing, a big upswing. the potential is finally supposed to come to fruition. not as in be a cup contender this year but finally actually building the stepping stones of being a perennial contender instead of a joke. the flames can do the same but are clinging to the past and don't want to suck the big one to improve. not much for prospects, not bad enough to have no brainer draft picks, just in limbo. that's the difference.
