5 years in the making
Well Iv been hunting elk for 5 years now, with lots of oportunities on bulls, but nothing ever working out inn the end.
Yesturday started out with us arriving in the bush before first light. We got our gear on and headed for a spot where I had missed a Big bull 2 days previous with the bow. When we got to the spot, we were busted by some cows and a spiker. this was chalking up to be another one of those days. We were thinking about headed to the truck, but decided to take a little walk to a water hole we knew of and have a little break before heading home. we sat down and had a couple granola bars and shot the s#!$. then just like that, a bull bugled down the hill. we looked at each other, grabbed our packs and headed down a quad trail, giving cow calls all the way. he was screaming up a storm and smashing brush as we go closer. we cut off the quad trail and headed for the bugles. stopping in a small opening, I cow called a few more times, before he showed himself. He came out at about 60 yards, my buddy had his bow so i gave him first shot. he decided not to take it and gave me the knod with the 300.
I let fly and the bullet met its mark, stopping the bull in his tracks, But he got up and started walking again so I let the gun bark one more time to bring him down where he stood. I went nuts, and couldent believe it. It finally happened. While collecting my thoughts I felt something running down my face, and looked down to see myself covered in blood. turns out 2 inches is way to close to the scope and not have a dandy cut above my eyes.
He turned out to be a nice 6x6. not too bad for a first bull. thought id share as i am still super pumped!

Looks like it was worth the wait. I have kissed myself with the scope, a couple of times over the years, when shooting animals in the field. Haven't drawn blood yet, but there have been some scrapes. It's just something else to remember it by.

Great job! They're definitely tough animal to get and that's what makes it so much sweeter when you seal the deal. You're on par for my average of one every 5 years. I've been hunting for 25 years with countless close calls especially with the bow.

Congrats dude, helluva nice bull,1st elk or otherwise!
5 years is nothin,I'd say I've been daydreaming about hunting elk in the mountains for as long as I can remember,30+ years hunting deer, moose, bears back east. This weekend the dream comes true, hoping to scratch both elk and muley off the bucket list this fall,I'd be tickled foolish if I put a 6x6 on the ground!!

A handful of posts and looks like your on the fast track to banned-camp.
If you've never been "scope bit", you haven't spent much time shooting anywhere but a bench. I have been "kissed" numerous times, with rifles ranging from 308 to 8 Rem Mag, and none of them are fun.
Oh, congrats on your Bull Quinner.

Congrats. Nice pointy head bones. An old timer once told me it takes about 5 years average to stalk the first elk, so you are on schedule.

thanks alot guys. Im not worried in the least about "ultimate predator". I seem to remember seeing a photo of Jim Shockey with a little blood running out of his forhead, and he seems to be doing alright in his hunting career. But i will be sure to take a photography course during all the free time I have. Oh well theres always one!
