I've never used one of those lights and always figured they're more a marketing ploy then anything. I've spent a few nights following bloodtrails with a Coleman lantern and a led maglight. If I'm by myself I just use the flashlight although I'm getting fairly tempted to try a surefire just to see if it's better. Anyway back to bloodtrailing, I prefer to track at night, I find it easier to focus my attention because my field of vision is limited to what my light is shining at. I've followed some very pathetic bloodtrails by flashlight that I couldn't follow in the daylight. The only downsides are you'll want a gps coordinate because your going to get turned around and you need to know the animals dead because you won't see it if it gets up when your 5 yards away from it. A second person is also a huge asset, but a second person is always good on a tough trail.
