Default Dakota Pheasants

Hey All

Can't get off here today.

Found out recently that my MIL visits some relatives in North Dakota and the family has welcomed me and my lab down for a pheasant hunt.

I have been looking at some youtube video's and the number of birds in some of these videos are unreal. Looks like hundreds flush at a time. While I know that is not likely the typical situation, I actually find that a bit of a turnoff. One should not complain but I don't want to fill my limits within 50 feet of the truck.

For me hunting is in the experience. Sure I like the harvest but I want a hunt for the harvest. Went to Sask. last year for WT hunt. My wife's cousin was acting as a guide to the area, so we start off road hunting on day one. Not for me but I play along. Within 10 mins of legal light we drive by a monster, by my standards, and he says "jump out and shoot it." I was successful..... in dragging my feet long enough that the buck bounds off before I can legally get a shot off. I ended up taking a smaller buck but on the last afternoon of the hunt and after 5-6 different stand sites. I was much more happy with this buck than I ever could have been with the first morning drive by.

Now back to pheasants. Anyone care to describe a typical day in the field in such a target rich environment.

N.D. has lots of pheasants and the further south you go the more there is. I have hunted both the northern and southern borders. The good thing about the south is you can hunt both North and South Dakota the same day.
If you're hunting "wild" birds it will be a little more challenging but still nothing like here in AB. Way more birds!!! My advice is to be picky. If their tail doesn't have a real noticable droop - don't shoot. It is not a matter of getting your limit it is how quick?
But you will definetly have a lot iof fun BUT BEWARE!!! - it is addicting....
Good luck
