Default Pepper vs Lead

In most situations i have been told that bear spray is more affective then a gun and the have information to support it...

what people dont tell you is that most of the time the information they gather from those outlets is a comparison between hunters and hikers. In that case its a no brainer between whose going to get attacked more. Someone being quiet and walking off the beaten path, or buddies hiking on a trail laughing at jokes making noise.

IMO Id rather have a 2 oz's of screaming lead flying at 1200fps towards a bear then a mist of jalapeno pepper extract...

I'm new to the site. And only into my 1 year subscription to the AO magazine, which has been re-newed. lol.

I'm sorry for dragging this older post back up, but wanted to thank you all for it. I'm a long time rifle hunter, and now after a 12 year bow break, I have started to bow hunt again. My 8 year old boy is developing a liking to the sport and I can't stomach the thought of harm to either of us while out enjoying the day. I've been stalked in the past by a griz while goat hunting central BC and it still haunts me even though there was no confrontation.

I'm leaning toward packing a SG, but havent ruled out the spray.

Again, thank you for all the information.

The boy is probably quicker than me, so I have to carry something....

yer in griz country just west of calgary once past 22, haven't had en encounter yet myself but one night hiking out while it just laid down some fresh snow and i'm a ridge away from anyone and my truck etc. i come across a steaming pile and big tracks....with only a bow in hand and headlamp on my head.....man that was a long walk back to the truck, bowhunters report all sorts of encounters, from grizzly down to cougars, bearspray almost should be mandatory part of the kit? i relax a bit in bowzone but not outside of it

I wear bear spray on my hip belt all the time. It's the smart thing to do. I've snuck along the edge of oatfields in the dark with a bow in my hand and seeing those big black beach balls pop-up can be a little unnerving!

Always a second person when calling elk in September.

Both armed with Bear Spray and Bowey knife or MAchete.

Called in a Grizzly in September and Cougar the year before.

Archery hunt all the time in prime grizz habitat and only ever bring my bow just got to be smart out there. The biggest problem i have had out hunting for elk is cougar. I have had a few to many scary encounters with cougars.

one quick thought is a 12g slug doesnt care what way the wind is blowing, if a bear charges from upwind all your gonna do with spray is blind yourself, and put some yummy seasoning on yourself too.
