Score them normally and give it a estimated inside spread of 18".

Great match set.

no kidding. i have a couple of whiteys with better than 25 inch beams.....none have a spread over 20. of course it sure inflates the score. heck, i might start using that on the deer ive killed.......it would make em all much higher than they are.

I'm an official scorer for the North American Shed Hunting Club. To enter a score into that club record book the sheds are scored as they normally would and no spread credit is given due to it being a guess. But as mentioned an 18 inch spread would give you a rough idea in most cases.

I have a plan here… just tell me where you found the sheds and I will head over and see if I can find the real thing… I promise I will tell you his spread…

I've always wondered how to go about judging inside width. I thought maybe their was a distance between bases you used (a set approximation number) to separate the horns and then measured the inside spread from there.

The distance of the bases might be pretty close on most deer, but the problem is that it's impossible to tell the angle that they will grow, and as every deer's antlers grow at different angles, the spread of the bases is irrelevant.

That makes sense. But which would give a better estimate, using the bases where you could play around with the angle of the horns to see what looks natural or throwing an average of an 18" spread?

I think I'd prefer using the bases myself (whether it's more accurate or not) just because I'd think it'd give a better mental picture of what the horns looked like on the deer.
