Default Gun registry call your mp now

I recently received a survey and appeal for funds from the Conservative Party. I am disturbed by question 3 on the survey. It asks if I support legislation to abolish the long gun registry. I do without any reservations. What the disturbs me is the other options on the survey which are no and unsure. Why is this question even being posed? Does the question's presence on the survey indicate a certain ambivalence on the part of the government when it comes to abolishing the registry? I hope not. The promise to abolish the registry formed part of the campaign platform and we were promised that the registry would go if the Conservative Party won a majority in the house.

Already emailed mine. I started a thread on the Guns & Ammo forum and the Op has my MP's reply on it. In short, the Safe Cities & Communities Act is the first issue on the agenda to tackle before the long gun registry. You'll have to read it yourself but that's what I got out of it anyway.

So, I sent an email off to the MP in my area, Mike Lake, this is what I got back. . .

Quote:
Dear Ms. Thorburn,

On behalf of Mike Lake, Member of Parliament for Edmonton – Mill Woods – Beaumont, I would like to acknowledge receipt of your e-mail and thank you for taking the time to share your concerns with him on this important issue.

Please be assured that your correspondence will be brought to Mr. Lake’s attention at the earliest opportunity and that your views and suggestions will be carefully considered. In the interim, and in order to ease communication, it would be greatly appreciated if you could send me your personal mailing address and telephone number.

Thank you again for contacting this office.

Sincerely,
Cynthia Guibord
Special Assistant

P.S. If you are interested in following Mike’s work as your MP, he is now on Twitter. Just visit http://twitter.com/MikeLakeMP if you want to learn more.
However, I did receive an email this morning from the Canadian Taxpayer Federation on the gun registry.

Quote:
Dear Supporter:

The Harper government is currently crafting a bill that will eliminate the wasteful and intrusive long-gun registry but is expected to keep in place the requirement for Canadians to take tests and become licensed before they can own firearms.

Last May, the CTF surveyed supporters asking whether the government should eliminate only the long-gun registry or both the registry and licensing process. More than 4,100 of you responded and said to eliminate both.

Bill C-68, passed in 1995, created both the long-gun registry and formalized the requirement for law-abiding long-gun owners to take tests and become licensed before registering their firearms. Previously, Canadians were required to obtain a Firearms Acquisition Certificate (FAC), which included a police check, in order to purchase guns.

While the Harper government should be commended for committing to end the wasteful and intrusive long gun registry, the time is now to push for them to not stop halfway. The time is now to eliminate the licensing requirement as well.

Public Safety Minister Vic Toews is responsible for the legislation. Contact him today. Thank him for his government’s commitment to eliminate the wasteful and intrusive long-gun registry and urge him to go back to the FAC system rather than maintain the current licensing scheme.

Honourable Vic Toews

FAX: 613-995-1049
Email: vic.toews@parl.gc.ca or toews.v@parl.gc.ca

You can also cc your response to the prime minister’s office (stephen.harper@parl.gc.ca) and the CTF (updates@taxpayer.com).

Thanks for all you do.

--Scott, Gregory, Courtenay and the whole team at the CTF

P.S. If you think it’s important to have a national taxpayers organization speaking up and working on these and other important issues, please consider a donation to help cover our costs by clicking HERE.

I don't think they should get rid of the licensing process, just get rid of the registry. They should put the firearm safety course into the education system so everyone has a knowledge of safe firearm handling. Knowledge is power!

Having a PAL or FAC doesn't matter to me. What I disagree with is the non restricted and restricted parts of the licence. A gun licence should be for all types of guns. Then if that happened we could hunt with handguns also.
Just a few thoughts

I actually started a similar thread after my MP informed me that discussions were being held about the long gun registry, after I asked him when they planned to abolish it. I questioned what the discussions were about, since the government has already promised to eliminate the long gun registry. I personally want to see some type of licensing to ensure that only people that have some knowledge about the safe handing of firearms can legally purchase them. If they want to add to the bill to abolish the long gun registry, then abolish the entire registry including restricted firearms as well, and allow the use of handguns for hunting, and for personal protection while hunting, fishing, or camping.
