either way I don't think I'd want to meet him/her at night without a bit of advanced warning!

They do, but those are vertical slashes, these are more horisontal slashes and start well ahead of the toes.

Good sized black.......all the grizz tracks I have seen have a gap inbetween the toe pads and where the claw mark is. This is just too close to the end of the toe.........

Definately a black! Here is another pic of a blacks tracks that i took a couple years ago. I know the claws are not showing on mine but this was on a firm gravel road. in the op's pic you can see that his bear stepped in a rig of dirt that is 3 inches deep of mud. of course the claws are going to show. In my pic there is a 7mm cartridge that messures 3 1/4 inches from primer to tip of bullet. Plus in the op's pic the pad is too rounded to be a grizz. Black for sure!!!

Looking at your link-The toe prints are very close together/touching= Grizz. also after looking at the toes compaired to the claws, the claws are the same lenght as the toe, every Grizz track i have looked at on line the claws are near the lenght of the toe? I wish a spent somemore time and took some better measurements, but I was a little anxious to get back to the truck.

I would have been too.
I have spent most of my life living in Black Bear territory. Only a few Grizz in this area. That track would have made me quite anxious.

Right now I'm wishing I had gone over to the neighbours the other day, after he found a pile of pre-owned Bear food beside his bunk house door.
With all the rain we've had, I bet I could have found tracks that look exactly like those, minus the claws, somewhere between my house and his. He only lives a 1/4 mile away.

I can accept that. I wonder if the bear can. ROFL
The truth is, the only way to be sure is to see the fool bear.

Tracks can fool the most experienced outdoorsman.

Some time I'll have to tell folks about the time I trapped a bear in the middle of winter, in a trap I had set for what I thought was a Wolverine. All the more experienced trappers in the neighbourhood, native trappers included, thought it was a Lynx.
Now before anyone panics, I told the game warden all about it the very next day. No laws were violated, no illegal activity was involved. Okay?

X2, grizzes have between one and two inches from the toe to the start of the claw.... Seen lots of black bear tracks as a bear guide..

How do you guys figure it's a grizz. The blue line is wrong. Its from the centre of the toe to the bottom of the pad not vise versa....
beartrack_id.png

Look at the picture 100% blackie......The only reason the toes in the picture are closer together is because of the deep impression in the mud.

This right here is the ticket. It's muddy. Grizz claws would be 3 inches in front, not that close to toes.
