Hunting elk with a 243 whos done it?
Just interested in knowing what round did you use?
If i want to knock the dark off brown of them i have a 375h&h and im not interested in hearing "a 243 is too small" many people out there couldnt kill a deer even if they were using a air strike

I used a 90 grain partition, but with the new copper bullets like Etip, Barnes ttsx etc, those would be a good choice.

6mm .243 100 gr InterLock® BTSP
100 gr hornady's worked great on all game for 10 years then I got the 243 made into a 6-284 which too has filled the freezer with one shot kills.

I will go to the Barnes next if I can whip up a recipe my rifle likes just a better constructed bullet for moose.
Yup said moose, luv slipping a small calibre bullet through the boiler room, they just stand there then tip over, a mosquito bit can kill

Killed plenty of moose and elk with my 243 using an 80 grain gmx all one shot kills. And only recovered 3 bullets on the far side resting against the hide all others were complete pass throughs. I have a hard time taking my .270 out now days because of it. I clean my rifle more often because of the mono bullets but the devastation they leave is worth it to me. I shoot the gmx out of my .243 .270 and 300wsm

My 2 nephews both took their first couple bull or cow elk with their 243 using 95gr BST. Shots were between 60-125 yrds with perfect shot behind the front shoulders.
They have since upgraded to 270WSM's with 140gr AB's a couple years ago.
Wish there was a 100-110gr Accubond to reload with for the 243. The 243 is what my boys will be using when they start hunting. Maybe I can find a 260REM in a Sako m 75ss for another smaller caliber rifle so they don't fight over the 243.

There's one on CGN right now, also a sako finnlight in 260. I'm looking for a 260 as well but not in those ones.

So, how many wounded an elk with a .243 and lost it ? Shot a few elk with a 7 mm Rem. and never felt over gunned.

This will go the .223 on deer route soon enough.

Seen it. IMO asking price is too high for a m75

My buddy uses a 6mm on a fairly regular basis for everything. I think there could be less dirty shots with small caliber than the larger ones, as they know its shot placement, not just relying on the damage that comes with the heavy ones.
Just a thought, though.

Yes I am tempted to buy a Sako m75ss in 30-06 as I have a new 25-06 barrel (I took off my m75 Greywolf 338-06AI project rifle) and for now put the 25-06 barrel on it.
This way my oldest boy can move up from a 25-06 to the 30-06 later.

Did you even read the post I was responding to????
What's wrong with you man? You got your blinders on?
They guy wants to hear from guys who have hunted elk with a 243, not guys who haven't but think think a 7mm mag is a sure thing.
I'm not starting squat, I'm keeping things in perspective.
So to answer your question, it was a true statement.

I have bought a few 243's starting with m55 and ended with a sako,i just never cared to use them.I don't really think anything bad about the cartridge it just didn't appeal with me.I tried ,but no fizz.
I went with a 25 06 plus a 6.5 x55 tikka and well never buy another 243win even if it was given to me I wouldn't take it.Luck has nothing do to do with killing things, experience and trusting the rifle you own does it.
If you feel comfortable and your shot placement is on the money with the 243 by all means if that's a cartridge you like.Every one wears there own kinda hat and ties there laces the way they want.
So to get it into your mind that everyone has to like what you think is best is childish. It's like telling everyone that pizza is the only food to eat and diet pepsi should only be drank.Well that would last about a tenth of a second in any argument ,same with all the cartridges around the world.100 percent go bang and can kill,so there's a big variety to satisfy all appetites in what you should shoot or like.
Cheers
JD

The only three GMX’s I have recovered from shooting elk or moose with my .243. I hunt in hilly bush country and shot a model 70 Winchester feather light. Next to no recoil and smooth handling. I actually bought it for my son when he was 4 I always used my .270. Last day of the season I picked it up to change my luck and shot a big cow elk at just over 300 yards the 79.6gr slug is the one I recovered from her. I haven’t taken my .270 out since....

There is something about the model 70 featherweight that just fits. I've had a pile of rifles through my safe but my model 70 featherweight is one that'll never leave here. Seems everything I shot at with it died.

Very nice indeed. I'd like to hear the stories behind the other two kills. Interesting for sure.

Looks like they performed as advertised.
Might have to start playing around with these pills for my 6-284....

The 79.6 was just over 300 yards like I said got a rib on either side and found it up against the skin on a big cow elk. 78.9 I **** a 5x5 bull at a 100 yards got a rib on the entire rib and part of the shoulder on the exit found that one again resting up against the skin. 77.4 was a two year old bull moose that one went between the ribs in entry got a rib and destroyed the front leg bone probably why it’s a little deformed. It was down in a valley quartering away. I’ve shot a few more elk and another moose with them only to find a hole on either side of the animal. To say I’m a fan of these is an understatement lol.
It leaves terminal damage on critters I wouldn’t hesitate to shot the biggest of moose with them. Dad and I hand load them in our .243 .270 and 300wsm’s. We shot a mountain caribou in northern BC a few years ago with the 300 165gr GMX my bull flipped right over dead and slid down the mountain. Dads bull managed to go about twenty yards before pilling up in some willows.
